ALFRED J. KNIGHT,
Letters Potent No.,103,344, dated Moy 24, 1870.
IMPROVED GUARD FOR. CARPET-SWEEPERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Be it known `that I, ALFRED J. lixlGnT, of the city, county, and State ot' New York, haye invented a new and useful Improvementvin Garpet-Sweepers; andV I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use thc same, ref-v -ers, cushions of long,r broad belts o1` strips of thick felt,
with straps at the ends, and a buckle arranged for attaching; them to large or small sweeper-s, all as hereinafter more fully specified.
Fignrel is an end-elevation of a carpet-sweeper havingr a cushion made accordi-ng to my improvement; and
i Figure 2 is a plan view of thc saine.
Similar letters of retlrenee indicate corresponding parts.
Stuffed cushions, with the ends connected by elastic straps of India rubber, adapted to bc applied to sweepers of `special size, have. been used, but they are objectionable, for the reasons that.' they will only fit the one size for which they are made, and that the sacks holding the stuffing soon tear or break, or are cut .'by the contact with the corners of the furniture or by other means, andthey are then worthless.
To avoid these diiiiculties, I propose to make these cushions or fenders ot' long and broad `strips A of thick felt, and stri ps B, at each end, of' strong caiivas,'leat-her, orother substance, and a buckle, C, tor buckling the strips A around sweepers of' any size, by taking up or lertiiig out the straps as required. y
These cushions' will not tear or break, and they resist the cuttingvaction of the. corners ofthe furui. ture and other things to which they are exposed better than the stuffed cushions now used.
I) represents the sweeper to which the cushion is applied. In attaching these cushions to the sweepers I propose to arrange the straps B and the buckles near where' the handles are connected, as this part is less liable to collie in contact with the furniture.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new. and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent- A circumjacent furnitin-@protector for carpet-sweepers, formed of a broad and thick strip of i'elt, having` its two ends adjustably connected, as shown and described.
The above speciticatiou ot'` my invention signed by me this 26th flav of November, 1869.4
v f A.. J. KNIGHT.
