UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VICTORIA L. KAEI-ILER, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
CORSET-WAIST.
T 0 all fr0/wm t may concern Be it known that I, VICTORIA L. KAEHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of /Tirginia, have invented a new and useful Coiset-laist, of which the following is a specification.
Hy invention relates to an improvement in corset waists the object being to produce a waist which will give suiiicient support to the body and to various articles of apparel, without injuriously binding` the body.
The accompanying drawing, which is a perspective view, illustrates my invention.
In the drawings, 10 indicates a main body of fabric such as muslin, having a length suflicient to a little more than half encircle the body. The lower line of this main body is provided at the middle of the' front with a. downward extension 11 and the upper line is provided at each side of the middle with upward extensions 12. The upper portion of the main body 10 is given sufficient fullness at 13, 13 for the busts and the main body is stiffened by vertical bones, or other desirable st-iffening members, as indicated at 14. To the upper end of each extension 12, into each of which a stiffening bone is preferably run, I secure one end of an elastic strap 15. These straps 15 are carried over the shoulders and down along the back, at each side of the backbone, and substantially parallel with the ends 10 of the main body 10, being spaced from said ends, and connected thereto by elastic straps 16. The lower straps 16 are extended beyond the lower ends of the straps 15, as indicated at 16, and to each of these extensions 16 I attach one or more buttons 17. Attached to the end of each extension 16 is a binding` strap 1S, which is preferably non-elastic and of sufiicient length to extend around the body to the front where the ends of the two straps 1S may be overlapped and connected by pinning or tying. In order that both of the straps 1S may lie outside of the waist at the front I provide an eyelet or opening 19 in one of the lower corners of the main body 10 through which one of the straps 18 is projected, as shown.
Secured to the depending portion 11 of the main body 10, and balanced with re- Specicaton of Letters Patent.

lation to the front center of that main body, are two straps 20, 2O which are preferably elastic webbing, and to the lowerl end of each of these straps 20, I attach a clasp 21 which may be readily attached to the wearers stockings. At an intermediate point in the length of the straps 2O those straps are connected by a cross strap 22 preferably of non-elastic material. At the rear I provide a U-shaped support consisting of a non-elastic cross strap 23 and two substantially parallel upwardly extending straps 24, 24 which are preferably elastic. Each of the straps 24 is provided at its upper end with a buttcnhole25 by means of which the straps 24 may be buttoned upon, and readily unbuttoned from, the buttons 17, the wearer selecting the particular buttons 17 which are properly spaced for the reception of straps 24 when the garment is in position. The pouched portions 13 of the main body 10 may be formed with an opening 26 for the ready exposure of the busts.
The garment described gives sufficient support to the bust and a suflicient coniinement of the body muscles without injuriously co-mpressing same and, it will be noticed, the backbone ott-he wearer is left entirely free. The cross straps 22 and 23 are arranged in proper position to receive safety pins or other attaching means for sanitary belts.
I claim as my invent-ion:
A garment of the class described consisting of a main fabric body for partially encircling the wearers body from the fro-nt toward the rear, main supporting straps attached to the upper edge of the main body and extended rearwardly and downwardly over the shoulders of the wearer, cross straps connecting the ends of the main body with the main supporting straps, fastening straps attached to the lower cross straps and arranged to be drawn in opposite directions aro-und the waist of the wearer, one of said fastening straps passing through a perforation in the main body, stocking-supporting straps attached to the front of the main body and depending therefrom, a cross strap connecting said stocking-supporting straps at an intermediate point in their length, a rear supporting member comprising a cross strap and a pair of upwardly extending supporting straps, und a connee- March, A, D. one thoueand nine hundred tion between the upper ends of Suid last und twelve. mentioned straps and fustenno straps, one i 1 L T* -w Y, of said connections being a seprable one. VUl Old* L KAIDHLEL" LL' S'l 5 In Witness whereof, I, VICTORIA L. KAEH- Ntnesses:
LER, have hereunto set my hand und seal at WV. P. SI-IELTON, Richmond, Vl'gina, this 18th day of ARTI-1UP. C. THOMAS.
