To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, MICHAEL HERING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arlington, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Furniture.- Springs, of which the following is a specification.

My present: invention relatesto an im provement in furniture springs, by which is intended. the class ofsprings useful in bed springs, sofas, chairs and the like. More particularly, the invention relates to the border-springs and their combination with the border-member or ratan that surrounds or edges the article. D

The advantages of the improvement are that it secures the springs to the border member and atthe same time prevents them from. turning about it as 'an axis. These and other advantages and features of my invention will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled inthe art from the following description in connection with the drawings. i

The drawings show my invention in one of the particular forms which it is adapted to take and as applied to a bed spring, Fig. 1 being a topplan view of a bed spring showing the relation of my improved border-springs -,with the border-member or ratan; Fig. 2 is a perspective view on a much'larger scale as compared to' Fig. 1 of one of the border-springs detached, and illustrating'its coiiperation. with a piece of the ratan; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section partly in elevation on the line 33 in 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.

I. will now describe the devices of thedrawings.

-1 .-1 designate the border-springs and 2 the border-memberwhichedges the top of the bed spring and is best made of ratan. 3is a longitudinal groove in the bordermember 2 extending'around its inside margin. The springs 1'-1 are made of coiled wire and at the bottom rest upon and are secured to anysuitable frame 4 constituting the bottom of the bed spring. The up-v per loop of each spring 1 "is bent to have a pair of portions-5 which encircle or embrace the border member, thereby prevent ing it from being pulled awayo'r 'disconnected from the sprlngs. It isfurther bent to havean elongated portion 6 which islo- .cated in the groove the' border-member."

The einbracing portions 5 are spacially separated from each other and the groove-engaging portion '6' connects them and is preferably a stralght piece lying wholly within the groove 3: More specifically, each of the embracing portions 5 consists of a U-shaped loop which is bent to extend under and then up around on the outside of the bordermember sufliciently to clamp or secure it to' the spring. The wire of these U-shaped loops 1s fiattened to make them project to a mlnimum from the surface of the bordermember. The elongated member 6 connects the inner legs of the aforesaid U-shaped loops. The result of the preferred construc-- 1 border-member and .an elongated portion between the foregoing which enters the groove in said member. Y

5. In furniture, the combination of a longitudinally grooved border-member; and coiled springs, each having a loop that has a port-ion which embraces (the cross section of the border-member and a portion which enters the groove in said member.

6. In furniture, the combination of a longitudinally grooved border-member; and coiled springs, each having a loop that has a portion which embraces the cross section of the border-member and a portion which enters the groove in said member, said embracing portion and said groove-entering portion engaging opposite sides of the cross section of the border-member.

7. In furniture, the combination of a longitudinally grooved bordermember; and

coiled sprl ngs, each having a loop that has a portion which embraces the cross section of the border-member and an elongated porber, said embracing-portion and said grooveentering port-ion engaging opposite sides of the cross section of the border-member.
