To all whom "it may concern."

Be it known that I, ANTON MUELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVausau, in the county of Marathon and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sample- Holding Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in sample-holding devices and more particularly to that class adapted to be used in connection with goods displayed and sold from the bolt and my object .is to provide a receptacle in which a strip of the goods may be stored.

A further object is to provide an opening or slot in the receptacle, through which the strip of goods may be removed.

A further object is to provide means for retaining a tag in position on the holding device, and, a further object is to provide means for securing the device into engagement with the core upon which the goods are wound.

Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the specification.

In the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bolt of goods, showing my improved holding device applied to Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the holding device removed. Fig. 8v is a sectional view thereof as seen on lines 3-3, Fig. 2. Fig. t is an end elevation of the holding device, and, Fig. 5 is a sectional view, as seen on line 55, Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings, in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the base of the holding device, which is preferably constructed of a flat strip of metal and is folded upon itself at one end to form a housing 2, the edge walls of the housing and the free end thereof being provided with downwardly extending flanges 3 and 4, respectively, which rest upon the upper face of the base 1, the housing being of less length than the base.

By forming the flanges on the housing the wall of the housing is elevated a distance above the base and that end of the housing integral with the base is therefore disposed at an angle so that the closed end of the housing will be substantially wedge-shaped and can be readily entered into the bolt 5 of the goods. The wall of the housing 2 adjacent its forward end is provided with a slot 6, through which the strip of goods 7 may be removed from the housing.

The forward end of the base 1 is provided with a downwardly and rearwardly extending tongue 8, which is adapted to fit over and engage the end of the core 9, usually in troduced into the bolt of goods, and in order to engage the holding device with the core to prevent casual disengagement therefrom, a tack or similar device 9 is driven through the downwardly extending portion of the tongue and into the end of the core.

If it is desired to attach a tag to the holcling device, the depending portion of the tongue 8 is provided adjacent its ends, with slots 10, through which the ends of the tag 11 may be introduced so that said ends will bind against the end of the core when the holding device is engaged with the core, and by introducing the tack through the tag as well. as the depending portion of the tongue, said tag will be held securely in place.

In applying my improved holding device to use, a strip of the goods is folded together and the housing 2 moved away from the base a sufficient distance to admit the folded strip into the housing. One end of the strip or sample is then introduced through the slot in the housing, when the housing is again lowered into position on the base. The tapered or wedge-shaped end of the then introduced between one sectlon of the bolt and the core therein and is moved inwardly until the tongue passes below the core and the end of the core is in engagement with the downwardly extending portion of the tongue. The tack is then driven through the depending portion of the tongue and into the end of the core.

When itis desired to give the customer a sample of the goods, a pull is made on the strip within the housing and when the proper length has been extracted therefrom, the removed portion can be severed an handed to the customer, thus obviating the necessity of cutting a portion from the bolt of goods.

It will further be seen that when the bolt of goods has all been used, the holding device can be refilled with the same or a dilferent sample of goods and placed in engageholding device is one piece of rectangular sheet metal and a housing bent over and base, said housing having one end flange bent downengagement with said base,

having a base, spaced from said side flanges and wardly and into said housing also having a slot near the flanged end thereof, and a tongue bent downwardly and then inwardly parallel to said base, said tongue being provided with slots adapted to receive a price tag.
