No 865,886. PATENTEDSEPTJIO, 1907. J, I. GUINN.
TAG HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 1, 1907.

. v rnsnonnnn.
\ Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 10, 1907.
Application filed llpril 1,l907. Serial lie-365.821.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES J. GUIlNN, a citizen of the United'zStates, residing at Quanah, in the county of Hardeman andstate of Texas. have invented certain -5 new and useful In-provements in Tag-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriprion of the inv ention; such as will enable others skilled in the art'to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to tag holders, and has for its object to provide a device which is simple and effective 7 and which can be secured to the side of' all kinds of cases or boxes that are to'be returned to theconsignor. It is adapted to hold the tag securely, while permitting the easy removal of the same when necessary, thereby adapting it for use by different persons or firms. In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention,-l igure l is a perspective view of my improved tag holder; Fig. 2 is .a longitudinal sectional .view of the same dpen; Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing it closed with a tag in position; and Fig. 4 is an end view of a box provided with a holder in position for receiving a tag, the tag being shown in dotted lines, partially inserted Referring more particularly to the drawings indicates the .base or main portion of the tag holder, which Y is preferably formed from a thin piece of material; astin, sheet iron, etc.,and has three of its sides bent over so as to form flanges 2. Adjacent to the unflanged or op en end of the holder, clamps are formed, as by stamping a portion of the base forward to form loops 3, underwhich a lock l is adapted to be moved longitudinally for securing the tag 5 in position. Each end of the fastener is folded, as shown at 6 and 7 the forward fold 6 forming I a stop for engaging with one of the loops 3 and preventing the removal of the fastener to the rear. The other bend or fold 7 is adapted to form a flange, corresponding with the flanges 2 for emerging with and preventing the removal of the tag after it has been secured within the holder.
In use, my improved tag holder 14's secured to the box or case in any desired manner, as by means of nails or fasteners 8. When a tag is to be inserted, the fastener 4 is withdrawn to its limit and the forward end of the tag is inserted under the flanges 2 at the rear for then shoved inward until its lip or flange 7 engages with the rear end of the tag and thereby holds it in position.
' As the fastener or retainer is adapted to be held in position by frictional contact, it permits of the holderbeing used with tags that are longer than the holder as well as with those that are of the exact length. By securing a tag to the box or other package in this manner, it will be securely held against accidental removal, and in case it is desirable to change the tags at any time, as to remove a damaged one or to insert one with a different name or'other instructions it can be done. by simply withdrawing the retainer and then removing the old tag and slipping in the new one and securing it by pushing the retainer forward. In this manner, the necessity for nailing or tacking each tag to the package is avoided and the greatest possible amount ol safety for the tag is secured. 7
Having described my invention I claim In a tag holder, :1 flanged base, having one end open and having loops stamped therefrom adjacent to said open end, and a reciprocatory retainer under said loops, the forward end being folded down upon itself to form a stop for engaging with one of said loops'and the free end of the retainer being bent over to form a flange.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' 1' JAMES J. GUINN.
