FILING DEVICE.
Specification Letters Patent. Patnted J 1y 16, 1912,
Application led November 18, 1911. Serial No. 661,086. I
` and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing Devices," of which the following is a specification.
I My invention relates to tiling devices, es-
pecially to means for supporting the papers or 4articles tiled, and comprises a follower nu and novel means for guiding and locating ""'trlie followelgyand arranging the same with relation to the drawer and the casing in `1,15 which the same is contained, and further colnprises noyel locking means for the follower. I`
It is the object of my invention further to provide a follower which occupies little space longitudinally of the drawer or container, and novel locating means therefor, which are quick and firm in their action and of such construct-ion asv-to provide large filing space in the drawer or container, and
the invention will be further readily understood from the following description and claims, and from the drawings, in which latter:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved device shown in connection with so much of a tiling cabinet as is necessary to illustrate myl invention, the filing cabinet being shown in horizontal section and-the middle portion thereof being broken away for better illustration of parts. Fig. 2 is a rear view. of my improved device, the drawer being shown in section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 and the clalnping lever being shown in unclamped position in full lines and in clamped position in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same taken on the line 3-3 of ig. 2, showing the device in unclamped relation. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the same, with the parts shown in Fig. 5 is a cross-section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3. Fig.'6 i's a similar view taken on the line 6-6 of 'Figa 4. Fig. 7 is a section vof my improved device taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 2. Fig. 8 is a rear el ration of the same showing one of the clamping-pieces remo-ved. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of one of the clamping-pieces. Fig. 10' is a cross-sectional detail, talgen on a line corresponding to the line 10-10 of Fig. 8, showing the rocking connection between the mating angle-pieces. Fig. 11 is a detail showing a port-ion of the rear wall of the drawer and the wing-receiving opening therein; and, Fig. 12 is a detail showing an inside side elevation of the front portion of the drawer and the wing-receiving pocket therein.
11 represents the casing and 12 a drawer in the casing, movable back and forth in suitable runways 13. yThe rear wall 14 of the draweiis preferably spaced from the rear Wall 15 of the casing or cabinet, when the drawer is closed, as indicated by the space 16.
17 is a followermovable lengthwise of the .drawer or container which is arranged to receive the letters, papers, documents or .other articles to be filed. The follower is arranged to be placed at suitable points lengthwise of the drawer for suitably supporting or compressing the articles between it and the front 18 of the drawer, the posi tion of the follower being arranged to be changed upon insertion or removal of articles for supplying additional space between the follower' and the front of the drawer, and the construction of tbedevice may be such that the follower is adapted to be moved back when the articles in the drawer are being referred to and moved forwardly for compressing the articles when the same are no'longer in use.
I have shown my improved device in connection with a metal filing cabinet, and I preferably construct the same of metal.
The drawer is provided with a guide, preferably at each side thereof, shown in the form of a channel 21 in each of the sides 22 of the drawer, the walls ot' the channel being bent. outwardly from the inner face 23. of the drawer for locating said channels outside said inner walls, so Vas to permit the location of the positioning 'means for the follower outside of the filing space, indicated at 24. in the drawer. The channel preferably comprises' an louter wall 25 and an inner wall 2G. the latter shown as bent downwardly from the upper edge 27 of the side of the drawer. The channel forms a guideway and by it, in the preferred form of my invention. one of the coacting locking members for the follower is formed. This locking member extends longitudinally of the drawer. The locking member coacting therewith is located on the follower, and is shown as amember which normally extends parallel with the ide therefor on the drawer and has tilting connection with the follower for tilting the same out of normal parallelism with said guide for clamping the same to said guide and thereby positioning the follower. In the preferred form of my invention there is a pair of these locking members on the follower for each of the guides, the same being arranged on anglepieces which I shall now describe, the angle- .pieces being preferably duplicates of each other, and I shall refer to them and the parts thereon by similar reference numerals.
31 is an angle-piece which has a wing 32 arranged to be received in the guideway and a wing 33 extending crosswise of the drawer. The wing 33 is provided with a lug 34 at one of its lside-edges and a lug 35 at its inner end. The other sideedge of the wing vhas a slot 36 therein. The face from .which said lugs project may also be provided with a recess 37. The end-lug 35 isadjacent one of the side-edges of said wing for forming a rabbet 38 at the other of said side-edges.
39 and 40 are holes in the wing 33, and 41 is a projection projecting from said wing in the direction of the lugs 34, 35, this projec` tion being at oneside of the hole 39, an infthe said rocker-member having a cam-por- I angle-pieces 1s received inthe indentation 42l on the other of said angle-pieces. These tion 53 thereon received in the mating recesses 37 in the adjacent faces of said pair ofwings. The projection 41 on each of said angle-pieces are varrangedin pairs, one of these pairs being arranged at each end of the follower, with the longitudinal wings extending in opposite directions and received vin the guideways at theerespective sides of the drawer. The wing which is adjacent to the follower is secured to the follower as by a rivet 54 or other suitable connecting member received through the'hole 40 therein.
The angle-pieces of each pair are rockingly associated as. by means of a`bo1t'155 and nut 49 firmlylheld thereon, or other suitablev connecting member, received through the holes 39, the projections between the adjacent facespermittiiig rocking'of one ofthe said angle-pieces upon the other;
The rocker-member 52 s preferably made of a metal rod, the middle portion of which nally is bent outwardly for forming a handle 56 and the ends of which are provided with an angular bend for forming the cam-portions 53. The handle is provided with a bend 57 which, when the parts are in locked relation, is received under the rearwardly extending upper portion 58 of the follower, in which' relation the outer bent ends 53 of the rocken' member project at right angles to the plane of said follower, or pass a line at right angles thereto, for maintaining the parts in locked relation. The parts are easily placed in unlocked relation by pressing down the handle, whereby the same assumes a position at substantial right angles to the plane of the follower and the said bent ends assume v'a position substantially parallel to said plane. The wings projecting transverse to said follower normally extend substantially parallelto the longitudinal projection of the guide or locking 'member, which extends longitudinally of the drawer. If now, the
said wings 'are rocked or tilted-they Will assume positions out of said parallelisms Iand thereby crowd upon or clampl'said guide 'or longitudinal locking member a'nd thereby hold the follower in the position-"at which it may at the time be located lengthwise 'of the drawer.
The relation of the'parts inthe present tratedlby comparingvFigs. and 5, inwhich the unlocked relation of th parts is shown,
and Figs.` 4 and 6, in whic the locked re- `lation, of the parts is shown, the wings in the latter figures beingshown clamped between the outer wall 25 andthe inner Wall 26 of the guideway. The locking wings are shown extending to the front and rear of the follower at the sides of the tiling space, leaving the tiling space clear of obstruction, but. locating the -forward wings in a transverse plane coincident with the transverse plane, when extended. of the filing space. For permitting maximum employment of the filing space, the rearwardly vextending Vwings are arranged 'to be received throughl 'openings 59 inthe rear wall 14-'of the -drawer into the space A16, and the front wings are arranged to be received 1n pockets A61 forming extensions of the sides 22 of the drawer. e
In the resent exemplificatlon of my 1nvention, t e' wingsjand ldeways form a vexemplification of my invention is best illus'- j,
.60 formed by inclined inclosing side Walls slide-support for the yfo ower and are arranged to be shifted into locking relation insaid guideways forlockingly' positioning .the follower at .desired polnts longitudiof` the drawer.' As hereinbefore stated, the parts are preferably made of metal, the saidV guidesand follower being formed of resilient sheet-metal which in practice is slightly resiliently.V distorted when the parts are placed in locking relation, the resilience of said sheet-metal parts causing said locking parts to spring into normal unlocked relation when the handle 56 has been sufficiently swung for turning the cam a distance siifficientto bring itsv high pointI back substantially out of a right line between the rocking axis of said roeking-member and its point of locking contact with said follower.
lhe lugs 34, 35, are sufficiently long to maintain tlie adjacent wings in proper re` lation irrespective of their degree of sepa ration and for maintaining theshanlis of the rt)cking-member between said end-lugs throughout ythe shifting movements of the parts. ',lhe projections et-l. being received in the indentations 42 aid in holding the opposed wings in alinemen-t.
'llie wing 33 preferably connects with the wing 32 by means of a neck 43 having a mouth 44 at either side thereof forthe reception of the flange QG, the lower wall of channel Q1 being devoid of obstruction for permitting ready insertion of the wing 32.
