Garments, of which the following is a speci-v ficat-ion.

This mvention relates to wearing apparel and more particularly to a comblnation garmentembodying in its structure, a coat and trousers.

The object of the invention is to provide a combination garment especially designed to be worn by chauffeurs, machinists and other persons, either as a-rain-coat, or as a top coat or ulster, and which will effectually protect the under coat and trousers and prevent the latter from becoming soiled, while at the same time permits freedom of movement of the legs of the wearer when kneeling, bending or performing manual labor of various kinds.

A further object is to provide a coat having trousers secured to the inner face thereof and capable .ofbeing adjustable vertically of the coatto fit the legs of the wearer.

A further object is to provide means whereby the trousers may be folded within the lines of the coat when not in use so as to permit the coat to be used in the ordinary manner.

' A further object is to providea coat, the trousers of which are suspended from the inner face thereof by flexible attaching straps so as to form in effect a loose connection between the trousers and coat and thus allowfree movement ofv the legs of the wearer.

Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions an'dminor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.

The improved combination garment forming thesubject matter of the present invention comprises a top coat or ulster 5, preferably formed of water proof material and having oppositely disposed side pockets 6. Suspended from the inner face of the coat 5, are detachable trousers legs 7 also preferably formed of water proof material, one of the legs 7 being preferably arranged opposite each pocket 6, as shown; The material at the'opposite vertical edges of each eferably conleg 7 is overlapped and provided with interengaging fastening devlces, pr sisting edge of the material and adapted to engage correspondingly shaped sockets 9 secured to the other edge of the material so that the illustrating a further modificaof resilient heads 8 secured to one,

Secured to the inner face of the material comprising each leg 7, at the upper end thereof, is a reinforcing tape 10, to which are detachably secured by interengaging fastening devices 11,. flexible suspenslon straps 12. The intermediate portions ofthe suspension straps 12, intersect above the ad'- jacent legs 7, while the upper ends of said straps are sewed or otherwise permanently secured to an attaching member 13 formed of canvas, leather or other relatively thick or durable material.

A guiding loop, or strap 14 is secured to one of the intersecting suspension straps '12 and embraces the mating suspension strap, thus to hold said straps in, assembled position, while at the same time permitting one strap to move relative to and independent of the other and thus allow freedom of movement of the legs .of the wearer, when bending, kneeling or otherwise performing manual labor. I

Sewed or otherwise secured to the inner face of the coat opposite each pocket 6, is a reinforcing strip 15 having a plurality of vertically disposed rows of fastening devices secured thereto and preferably in the form of resilient heads 16, similar in construct-ion to the heads 8, and adaptedd to engage sockets 17 secured to the inner face of the adjacent attaching member or strip 13. Thus it will be seen that by causing the sockets 17 to engage the different heads 16 on the reinforcing strip 15, the legs 7 may be adjusted vertically of the coat to fit the legs of the wearer and thus permit the garment to be worn by persons of different sizes. a

It will here be noted that by reason of th flexible connection between the upper end of each leg 7 and the coat, the legs of the wearer may be moved in any direction, either when standing, kneeling or bending, without causing the tail of the coat to wrap or bind about the legs of the wearer, or without in any manner impeding the movementv of the legs when walking. It will also be noted that the legs 7 are attached to the inner face of the coat at their upper ends only, the lower ends of said legs being extended below the lower edge of the coat,

thus effectually to protect the trousers and prevent the same from becoming soiled.

When it is desired to use the coat in the ordinary manner, the legs 7 may be folded within the lines of the coat, by releasing the lower fastening'devices 8 and 9 thereof and passing the verticaledges of the members 7 at said fastening devices over the. adjacent' attaching member or strip 13 and at the rear of the central fastening device 17 of said strip, the fastening devices 8 and 9 being subsequently pressed togetherso as to hold the trousers legs suspended within the coat, as best shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings; v If desired however, the fastening devices 8 and9 may be omitted and the trousers legs formed'of a continuous piece of fabric orone or more pieces permanentlyin Fig. 4' of the which'figure also shows the flexpermanently secured to both the trousers leg 7 and attach-- ing member 13', as indicated at 18.

Itwill of course be understood that the. guide loop or strap 14 may besecured either to the front of one of the flexible suspension straps or to .the rear thereof, as indicated at 14: in Fig. 4 of the drawings.

In Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive, there is illustrated a further modification, in which the material forming the vertical edges of each trousers leg is overlapped and detachably united by suitable fastening devices 19. In this'form of the device, the flexible suspension straps 12, are dispensed with and the legs suspended from the inner face of the coat by interengaging fastening devices 16 secured to the reinforcing strips 15 and tapes 10.

In folding the leg shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the lower fastening device 19 is released and the ends of the material, indicated at 20, passed over the reinforcing tape 10 and downwardlybetween said tape and the reinforcing strip 15 on opposite sides of the central fastening device16, the member'scomprising the fastening device 19 be ing subsequently brought together, as. best shown in'Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawings, this folding operation being substantially the same as the folding operation in Figs. 1 and 3'of the drawings.

It is to be noted that the members 7 of the different forms of the device, are secured to the inner face of the coat at their upper ends only, the lower ends of the members 7 being free so as to permit freedom of movement ofthe legsof the wearer. It will also be noted that the strip 15 not only forms a means for supporting the fastening device 16, but also serves to reinforce and strengthen the pockets 6 and to receive the direct strain or pull of the members -7 when bending or kneeling, thus effectually to prevent tearing or otherwise injuring the coat. 7

It will of course be understood that the legs or members 7, shown in Figs. 1 to 8 inclusive, may be entirely detached from the garment and carried in the pocket, when it is desired to use the coat in the ordinary manner, but it is preferred to fold the mem-' bers 7 within the lines of the coat when not in use, so that said -members will always be in position to receive the legs of the wearer when it is desired to change the character ofthe garment from an ordinary coat to a combination coat and trousers, this result being effected by releasing the fastening devices 8 and 9, shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and 19 shown in Fig. 5, and allowing the members 7 to drop until the free ends thereof project below the lower edge of the coat, as-will be readily understood.

Having thus described the invention, what isclaimed as new is; 4

1. A garment including a coat, trousers legs .suspended from the inner. face of the coat, attaching members secured to the coat, and intersecting flexible suspension elements permanently secured to said-attaching members and detachably secured to the upper portions of the trousers legs.

2. A garmentincluding a coat, reinforclngtrousers leg and embracing the other strap thereof, and interengaging fastening de 'vices' carried by the attaching members and reinforcing strips, respectively. p

3. A garment. including a coat, reinforcing strips secured to the'inner face of the attaching members, flexible coat, trousers legs suspended from the inner face of the c oat at said reinforcing strips, suspension straps having-their upper ends permanently secured to the attachlng members and vtheir lower ends detachably secured to the upper ends of the trousers legs, and interengaging fastening devices carried by the attaching members and reinforcing strips, respectively.

4. A garmentincluding a coat, reinforcing strips secured to the inner face of the coat, attaching members trousers legs suspended from said attaching members and each having their vertical edges overlapped and detachably united, and interengagmg fastening devices carried by the reinforcing strips and attaching members, respectively, the lower end of each trousers. leg being adapted to be passed over one of said fastening devices and between the reinforcing strip and upper end of the trousers leg for .holding the lower end of the trousers leg in elevated position.

5. A'garment including a coat, reinforcingstrips secured to the inner face of the coat trousers legs suspended from the reinforclng'strips and each formed of a strip of material, the adjacent vertical edges of which are overlapped, fastening devices for securing the overlapped edges of each tr0users leg in assembled position, the members forming one of the fastening devices on each trousers leg at the bottom thereof being adapted to be released and said trousers leg folded upon itself and passed downwardly between the upper end of said trousers leg and the adjacent reinforcing strip and the members of said fastening device united for holding the trousers leg in folded position.

6. A garment including a coat, reinforcing strips secured to the inner face of the coat, trousers legs sus ended from said re-' 'inforcing strips, attac ing. members, intersecting flexible suspension straps permanently secured to the attaching members and detachably secured to the upper portions of the trousers legs, and interengaging fastening devices carried by the attaching members and reinforcing strips respectively.

7.- A garment including a coat, attaching members, trousers legs suspended from said attaching members and each having their vertical edges overlapped and detachably united, and interengaging fastening devices carried by the inner face of the coat and the attaching members, respectively, the lower end of each trousers leg being adapted to be passed over one of said fastening devices and between the inner face of the coat and upper end of the trousers leg for holding the lower end of the trousers leg in elevated position.
