FASTENING DEVICE.
Specification oi Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1912.
Appuoauon mea August a, 1911. serial no. einem.
'Toy all fz'bh'om z't may concern:
`Be it known that I, .Timms J. DUNN, a
l`citizen of the United States, residing at` Denver, in the county of Denver and State' ofOolorado, have invented new'and useful Im rovements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention. is'to provide a device for retaining connectible articles in connected and rigid position, the device be- 'lhg'fpa'ticularlyadaptable for use in connection with metallic structures such' as window casings and the like where bolting Re erence is to be had to the accom any` ing drawings constituting a part o this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views and inwhich` i Figure 1 is a erspective View of my fastening device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my device, showing the same applied Vfor connecting a plurality of structures, the device being in initial position and the structures being shown in section. Y Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing my device in final position to retain the structures in ritgid enga ement. Fig. ,4. is a side elevation o a modi ed form of my device showing the same applied to a plurality of structures for retaining the same in rigid engagement. Referring more particularly to the views, Iprovidea single strip of material 10 bent to form a loo 11, having a head 12 and ends 13, the said strip of material 10 beingy then bent rearwardly at the ends 13 of the loop 11, to form portions 14 to lie upon the outer sides of the loop 11, the ends of the portions 14 being arranged to extend toward the head 12 and within a short dis loop 11 and the portions 14 are now passed through anv aperture 16 in a supporting plate 17, so that the upper side of the supporting plate will -be engaged by the under sides of the flanges 15, the ends 18 of the flanges 15 being then bent around the edge of t e plate 17,toengage the under side of the plate as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. As shown 1n Figs. land 2, it will be seen that -the hcad12 of the loop 11 extends upwardly a distance beyond the supporting plate 17, while the lower ends 13 of the loop ll extend v.downwardly a'I distance beyond the late 17, the inner sides of the portions 14 em 'arranged to lie on the outer sides ot the oop 11.
When it is desired to secure a bracket 19 to a base 20, the ends 13 of the loop 1l vand the portions 14 are passed through registering openings in the bracket 19 and base 20 so that the ends 18 of the flanges 15 will lie against the upper side of the bracket ll). A hammer is now applied to the head 12 of the loop 11 to force the. same downwardly and in doing so the portions 14 will be bent outwardly and the lower ends 13 of the loop ll will be bent laterally to the loop when the head 12 reaches a position in horizontal alinement with the Hanges 15 as shown in Fig. 3; Thus, it will be seen that the ends 13 of the loop 11 and the portions 14, bent outwardly by the `force applied to the head 12 will retain the bracket 19 in rigid engagement with the base 20.
In Fig'. 4 I disclose a modified form of my device and in which I provide a series of serrations 21 on the outer sides of the portions 14,the' said sei-rations being adapted to gri the base 2O when the head 12 is hammeredpdownwardly to force the lower portions of my device outwardly as shown in P ig. 4. y providing the plate 17, a supporting surface is formed for engagement with the upper side ofthe bracket 19 and when a downwardpressure isapplied to the head 12 of the loo 11, that Iportion of the bracket 19, covered) by theplate 17 will be prevented from bending o r (giving with the pressure applied to the hea 12as will be readily understood.
`Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new, is
1. In combination with a supporting plate, a single strip of material bent. to form a loo having a head, the said strip being then iient rearwardly at the ends of the loop to form portions extending toward the head thereofftheends of the said loo and the said portions being then passed t irough an aperture in the said plate so that Vthe ends of the loop will extend a distance beyond one side of the plate and the head ot' the loop will extend a distance beyond the other side of the plate, the said portions being then bent to forni outwardly extending lnnges for engagement with the upper side of the plate with the ends of the said flanges bent around the edge of the plate to engage the under side thereof.
2. In combination with a supporting plate, a strip of material bent tofforma loop extended through an aperture in the said plate `with the head of the loop extending a distance beyond one side of the plate and the ends of the loop extending a distance beyond the other side of the plate, the said strip being then bent rearwardly upon the loop and then bent laterally outward from the loop to form flanges engaging the said supporting plate to rigidly retain the supporting plate in engagement With the said strip and sel-rations being formed on the portions of the said strip that are bent rearwardlylupon the said loop.
In testimony whereof I alix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
