My invention relates to banding devices. The principal object of the invention is to provide a banding device made from ay single thickness of metal.
Another object of the invention is to provide a banding device that has an integral head for locking an end of the band, but without a shoulder between the head and the band. l
The invention also comprises novel details of construction and novel combinations and arrangements of parts, which willl more fully appear in the course of the following description.
In the drawings, like referencecharacters designate similar parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a broken, plan view of an embodiment of the invention in a locked position.
Figure 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.

Referring more in detail to the drawings, in the forrn shown in Figure 1, a band I2 has an integral, enlarged head I3. 'Ihe head I3 is elongated, as shown at I4, to underlie the portion of the band I2 adjacent the locking tip. The locking tip of the band I2 is shown at I5.
The head I3 is slotted, as shown at I6 and I1, and the portion of the head I3 between the slots is pushed out of the plane of the remainder of the head I3, as shown at I8.
In locking this form of the invention, the .tip I5 of the band I2 is layed upon the end I4 and inserted through the slots I1 and I6. The tip I5 is then bent back upon itself and upon the pressed out member I8. The outermost portion of the tip I5 may be crimped, as shown at I9, to further lock the band in position.
In the form shown in Figure 3 a band 20 has a (Cl. 224-20) l headZI.l The head 2l is slotted as shown at 22, l23,-24 and 25. The metal ofthe head 2I is bent upwardlybetween the slots 22 and 23 and between slots 24 and 25, to provide upwardly bent portions 28 land 29 respectively, considering Fig- 5 ure 3 Vas. being a top view. Ther portion of the headr 2| between the slots 23 and 24 is left in the same plane as thehead 2 I. In this form a tongue 21 on the headZI 'is bent-backward under the head.
is inserted under the upwardly bent portions 29 and 28 and the tip 26 is thenv bent back upon the band 248 and upon the top of the bent up portions 28fand 29. IIhe broken lines 38 illustrate the 15 method of inserting the tip 26 under the bent up portions.` The entire lock may then be .placed under pressure, in order toI crimp the band2 at the slots 22, 23, 24 and 25. The crimping of Athe band 20 is best shown in Figure 4.
In the form shown in Figure 5, a band 31 has an integral head 32 provided with a tongue 33. The head 32 is slotted as shown at 34 and 35.
In practice the head 32 is bent, as shown at 36, and tip 31 of the band 3I `is thereupon inserted 25 through the slot 34 at the bend 36. The tip 31 of the band is thereupon fed down through the slot 35 and folded around an upwardly bent portion 38 of the head. The tip 31 is then bent down upon itself and upon the upwardly bent portion 30 38. Thus far is shown in Figure 6. Thereafter the head 32 is bent down upon the bent tip 31, as shown in Figure 7, which is the locked position.
In the form shown lin Figure 8, a band or strap 40 has a tip 4I at one end and an enlarged, inte- 35 gral head 42 at the other end. A tongue is. punched from the head 42, leaving an opening 44 therein. The tongue is mounted on a jaw 45, which is formed by raising the jaw from the plane of the head 42, the raised portions being 40 shown at 46. An edge of the jaw 45 has been severed from the body 42, as shown at 41, prior to the raising of the jaw 45. The slit 41 has curved ends 48, which minimize strain and tearing at these points.
In practice, the tip 4l is inserted between the tongue 43, the jaw 45 and the head 42. The tip 4I is then bent back upon the jaw 45 and the tongue 43 is bent over the tip 4|, as shown in Figure 11. The edge of the tongue 43 may be curved around 50 the bend of the tip 4I, as shown at 49.
In the use of the present invention`,-in each of the forms the band or strap is passed around the article or group of articles to be banded and the tip of the band or strap is locked in position upon In locking this form, the tipv 26 of the band 20 10 the integral head by one of the means heretofore described. The locking details of the several forms have been described immediately following their respective descriptions.
While I have illustrated and described what I now regard as the preferred embodiment of my invention, the construction is, of course, subject to modifications without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. I, therefore, do not wish to restrict myself to the particular form of construction illustrated and described, but desire to avail myself of all modifications which may fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A banding device comprising a strap, a head on the strap, a jaw extending outwardly from thekhead and disposed in a plane substantially parallel thereto, the jaw being arranged on the head to provide a passage between the jaw and the head, the passage extending longitudinally of the head and strap and being open at both ends, and a bendable tongue-on the jaw extending therefrom in a direction opposite to the direction thatthe strap extends from the head when the device is flat and prior to bending of the tongue, the head, jaw and tongue being of a single sheet of material, the tongue also being spaced from the head at a side thereof and disposed in a plane substantially parallel with the head, the strap in a banding position being in serted through both ends of the passage and disposed beneath the tongue.
2. A banding device comprising a strap, a head on the strap, a jaw offset from the head butdisposed in a plane substantially parallel thereto,
the jaw being arranged on the head to provide a passage betweenthe jaw and the head, the passage extending longitudinally of the head and strap and being open at both ends, and a bendable tongue on the jaw also offset from the head and extending in a direction lengthwise of the head and strap.
3. A banding device comprising a strap, a head on the strap, the head and strap having a continuously smooth innerside for engaging an article or articles being banded, a jaw extending outwardly from the head and arranged to provide a passage between the jaw and the head, the
"passage being open at both ends, considering its length as being substantially parallel with the length of the head and strap, and a bendable tongue connected with the jaw and extending in a direction lengthwise of the head and strap.
4. A banding device comprising a strap, a head on the strap, the head having an opening in the face thereof, a jaw extending outwardly from the head and connected with the head at the sides of the opening, the jaW being arranged to provide an open-ended passage between the jaw and the head, and a bendable tongue on the jaw disposed opposite a portion of the opening in the head and bendable to a position extending lengthwise of the head and strap.
A banding device comprising a strap, a heau on the strap, a jaw extending outwardly from the head and arranged to provide an open-ended passage for the strap, and a tongue connected with the jaw and bendable to a position extending lengthwise of the head and strap, the strap, head, jaw and tongue being of a single sheet of material.
