Application filed October 13, 1927. Serial No. 225,987.
This invention relates to improvements in metallic collars and the like and it consists of the matters hereinafter described and more )articularly pointed out in the ap, pended claims.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a collar of this kind including a oop like body and a laterally extending apertured ear, which may be readily made of strip metal without waste, in great numbers at low cost. i
A further object ofthe invention is to provide a device of this kind wherein the ends of the strip are brought into engage- 'ment to provide an apertured ear and wherein one of said ends has at least a part thereof folded over upon the other end to hold said ends in the ear forming position.
These objects of the invention as well as others, together with the many advantages thereof, will more fully appear as I proceed with my specification.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a metallic collar embodying one form of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view therethrough in the plane of the body and ear thereof.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a. strip of metal from which the collar shown in Figs. l and 2 is made.
Fig, l is a View similar to Fig. 2 of a modified form of collar embodying my invention.
Referring in detail to that embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. l to 3 inclusive of the accompanying drawings, my improved metallic collar which is made of a strip of metal 1 such as shown in Fig. 3, in-
. cludes an annular but not necessarily a circular body 2 and an apertured ear 3 of more than a single thickness of metal. In making such a collar I provide a metallic strip 1 having an elongated mid portion 4: and two end portions and 6 respectively. Both of said end portions have openings 7-*7 therein and one of said end portions is longer than the other to provide an extension 8 which is bent over upon the shorter end as best shown in Fig. 2, when said strip has been bent or folded into finished collar form. In making up a collar from such a strip I `bend said mid portion upon transverse lines 9-9 into the desired outline or shape and then bring the ends 5 and 6 re-.
spectively into face to face engagement and with the apertures therein, in register;
after which the extension 8 is bent over sired. Preferably but not necessarily so,
after the bending and forming operation, the ear thus produced may be placed in a 'press to firmly engage the parts thereof together. Thus there is no danger of the strip ends forming the ears becoming separated. 1
In Fig. 4 I have shown a slightly modified form of construction wherein the extension 8a is made of a length approximatlng that of the ear forming ends andhas an aperture 7 therein to register with the aperturesl 7-7 in said ends. With such a construction the ear comprises three full thicknesses of metal which cannot come apart under a pulling` strain.
The collar is useful in many places and may be readily made at a low cost without waste.
. Another feature is that the collars may be shipped to the users in strip form and then bent into collar form 011 the job when it is impractical to slip the formed collar `in place from one end.
While in describing the invention I have referred in detail to the form of the parts thereof aswell as the manner of its assembly, I do not wish to be limited thereto except as may be pointed out vin the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
l. A collar of the kind described made from a metallic strip and embodying therein an annular body and an apertured ear composed ofat least two end parts of the strip and arranged face to face, with one of the end parts having a portion folded over upon the other end part to hold saidend parts together.
2. A collar of the kind described made from a metallic strip and embodying therein an annular body formed from the mid portion of the strip and an apertured ear formed by the end portions of the strip brought into face to face engagement, with a portion of one of said end parts folded over upon the other end part to hold them end portion folded over upon the other to in ear forming relation. provlde three thicknessesk to said ear, all of 3. A collar of the kind described made which have registering openings to provide 1o from a metallic strip and embodying therean aperture through said ear. 5 in an nnula-r body portion formed from the i vIn testimon whereof, I have hereunto central portion of the strip and an ear made set my hand, this 10th day of October, 1927. from the end portions of the strip with one GEORGE I. GOLDWYN.
