UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM 1V1. DUCKER, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SASH-HOLDING DEVICE. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. DUCKER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Holding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to automatically operating devices for holding window sashes, and its particular object is to provide simple, durable and effective means for rendering windows substantially dust-proof, preventing the rattling of the same, holding the same in raised position at any point of the window frame, and for locking same should this be desired.
Other features may appear as hereinafter more fully set forth.
Sash holding devices of similar character have been described and claimed in the inventors prior U. S. Patents Nos. 828,098 and 828,099, patented Aug. 7th, 1906, and the present invention is an improvement thereon and a modification thereof, and consists, broadly, in the arrangement of the ratchet friction wheels mounted upon an axis which is in a plane parallel to the plane of the window, in the arrangement of suitable recesses of considerable depth in the frame contacting with the friction rollers, and in a locking device, preventing the displacement of the friction rollers, when the same have entered one of the aforementioned recesses.
The invention is illustrated in one preferred form in the accompanying drawing, forming part of the present application, in which Figure 1 is a perspective elevation of a window frame and a sash movable therein. Fig. 2, a perspective view showing the lock; Fig. 3, a cross section of the same locked; Fig. 4, a perspective view of the recessed strip on the window frame; Fig. 5, a horizontal section through the sash and frame showing the engagement of the friction roller with one of the recesses in the friction strip of the frame; Fig. 6, is a front elevation of the sash holder; Fig. 7 a side elevation, partly in section, of the sash holder and frame, and Fig. 8, a perspective view of the movable plate, carrying the friction roller.

of the window frame.
Patented July 2, 1912.
Serial, n 515,256.
Numeral 1, in Fig. 1, indicates the frame of a window, in which there is arranged slidable, in a suitable manner, the sash 2. Secured to .the sash 2, in planes parallel thcrewithin contradistinction to prior arrangements of sash holding devices of similar characterare arranged devices, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. These devices comprise a body plate 3, adapted to be secured to the edge of the sash 2, and carrying, at substantially right angles thereto, a front plate 4. This front plate is extended into a suitable casing 5, provided with slots 0, and lugs 7, for a purpose, more fully hereinafter to be described. The casing 5, contains the movable plate 8, Fig. 8, of the drawings, provided with lugs 9, adapted to engage the slots 6 of the casing 5. The plate 8 is furthermore provided with suitable bearings 10, having elongated bearing slots 11, for holding the journals 12, of the friction rollers 13. These rollers are provided with sets of teeth 14,.adapted to engage the.
In the preferred construction of the invention, the sash holding devices are arranged on the inner side of the sash, so that the springs 16, cooperating with the plate 8, force the friction rollers 13, against the front edge of the friction strip 17, and press the sash tightly against the outer part of the wiudowfranie, thereby causing dustand weather-proof contact with the outer edge \Vhenevcr a friction roller coincides with one of the recesses 18, of the friction strip 17, the roller enters this recess, and holds the sash at this height securely, so that it requires a considerable effort to raise or lower the sash, which cannot take place through the ordinary shaking, rattling or jerking of the window.
In order to lock the window sash entirely,
the plate l, is provided with an extension 19, carrying a pin 20, forming a bearing for a locking member 21. If required, a helical spring 22, may control the operation of this locking member. A knob 23, is connected to one end of the locking member 21, While the other end is formed into a tongue 24, adapted to enter the casing 5, and .be located underneath the plate 8, as "indicated in Fig. 8 This tongue 24: prevents the movement of this plate, the compression of the springs 16, the removal of the rollers from the recess, and therefore, successfully looks the window sash. The bolt for the button 23, moves in the circular slot 25, of the plate 19. The button 23, being of considerable weight, is gravity-operated, but may be spring operated, if this should be desired. The closing of the sash and the jerk incidental to the contact of the sash with the bottom of the frame, causes the tongue 24, to enter the casing 5, behind or underneath the plate 8, and the friction roller 13, having entered one of the recesses 18, provided at a suitable point of the friction strip 17, cannot be removed therefrom wit-hout first lifting the button 23, and, thereby, removing the tongue 24, from the casing 5.
As new and useful is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination with a sash and its frame and a friction strip carried by said frame, said strip having one or more recesses, of a sash holding device comprising a friction roller carried by said sash and adapted to be received by any one of said recesses, and gravity controlled means adapted to lock said friction roller against removal from said recesses.
2. In a sash holding device, the combination with a casing, a movable plate mounted therein, a rotatable roller on said plate, and gravity cont-rolled means adapted to lock said plate against displacement.
3. In a sash holding device, the combination with a casing having slots, a movable plate having lugs engaging with said slots, a roller mounted on said plate and having ratchet teeth, a detent on said casing and adapted to engage with said teeth, springs supporting said plate in said casing, and gravity controlled means adapted to lock said plate against displacement and prevent compression of said springs.
4. A sash holding device, comprising a sash and frame, said frame being provided with a recess on a face in engagement with said sash, a retractile friction-roller, arranged to automatically enter said recess when in register therewith, and gravity controlled means for locking said roller against removal from said recess.
Signed at New York in the county of New York and State of New York, this 27 day of August A. D. 1909.
