WINDOW-ROLLER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. CL NES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window- Rollers; and I do hereby declare the following to be'a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sash fasteners, and has for its object to provide a device which will eliminate the necessity of using springs and other such means which add to the expense of manufacture.
Another object of my invention is to provide a sash holder which will retain a win dow sash at the desired height.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device of the above character which will eliminate the complicated mech anism usually accompanying such devices.
With the above and other objects in view, I will now proceed to describe my invention in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a view of my improved sash fastener as it would appear with the front plate removed; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 1 indicates the usual window frame, in which the sash 2 is slidably mounted. This sash 2 preferably comprises the side and end walls 3 and 4, having the glass 5 secured therein.
The rack bar, indicated at 6, is provided intermediate its sides and at regular intervals with the apertures 7, these apertures 7 being spaced by the bar 8, which is formed of the material after the openings have been punched in the rack bar. The ends of these apertures 7 are tapered, as clearly illustrated at 9, and have their widest opening facing outwardly. This rack bar 6 is secured to the window frame 1, immediately adjacent the window, and is adapted to cooperate with the gear wheel carried by the sash lock.
My improved sash lock preferably comprises the base portion 10, which is provided at its upper extremity with the upstanding wall 11, preferably curved on its inner side, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1, to form a Specification of Letters Patent.

recess in which the gear wheel is adapted to operate. A longitudinally extending wall at 14, to conform to the shape of the weight carried by the latch. This abutment is provided adjacent one extremity with a recess 15, which is adapted to receive a depending portion formed on the latch and provide a pivot therefor. Extending outwardly from the casing at the recess 10 of the abutment 13, I preferably provide the finger hold 16, upon which pressure is adapted to be applied when the window is being raised. A suitable stop or lug 17 is formed intermediate the sides and ends of the base portion 10 and provides a stop against which the latch is adapted to rest when in its locked position.
A gear wheel 18 is pivotally mounted on a cylindrical lug 19 and provided at its outer periphery with the teeth 20, these teeth being adapted to enter the slots out in the rack bar 6 when the device is in place. These teeth 20 are tapered, as clearly illustrated, and are adapted to fit snugly within the tapered slots, and when the latch is in place are adapted to form a rest which will prevent the window from dropping.
The latch previously mentioned preferably comprises the upstanding member 21 having at its lower extremity the depending lug 22, which is preferably round, as clearly illustrated in Fig.1, and adapted to seat in the recess 15 formed in the abutment 13, thereby forming a pivot on which the latch is adapted to swing. Extending outwardly from the outer wall of the upstanding portion 21, I preferably provide a finger hold 23 and it will be clearly seen that when pressure is applied to the finger hold the upper end of the upstanding portion 21 will be withdrawn from its position, and thereby permit the gear wheel 18 to revolve.
Formed integral with the upstanding member 21, and extending in the opposite Y to keep the upstanding member 21 of the latch normally in engagement with the teeth on the gear wheel 18, and thereby prevent the said gear Wheel from rotating.
' It will be obvious from the foregoing thatthe operation of the device will be as follows: When it is desired to apply my device to a window, the rack bar is put in place on a window frame and the sash holder is then secured to the frame of the window sash with the teeth on the gear wheel 18 entering the slots 7 in the rack bar. 7 Upon raising the sash, the wheel will be caused to rotate and the upstanding portion 21 formedon the latch will ratchet over the teeth of the wheeland permit free rotation thereof.
.After thewindow has been brought to the desired position, it will be obvious that the end 21 ofthe latch will be forced beneath one of the teeth of the wheel bymeans of the weighted end 24-. When it is desired to release the window pressure is applied, on the arm 28, and it will be seen. that thiswill" cause the end 21 to swing out of engagement with the wheel and therebyfpermitthe wheel:

A sash lock comprlslng a fixed vertical rack bar-,a casing provided with means for securing it to a sash and: provided at its outerside with an opening and having a solid; transversely disposed inwardly tapered bottom portion forming an inner inclined edge extending downwardly and inwardly at the said tapered portion, the latter being provided at the top adjacent to the upper end of'the inclined face with a bearing recess, a handle rigid With the casing and extending outwardly therefrom at the outer side of the bearing recess and located at the lower end of the said opening, a gear wheel mounted in the casing above the said tapered portion in spaced relation with the same and meshing with the rack bar and a latch consisting ofa vertically disposedarm arranged toengage the teeth, of the gear wheel at its upper end and provided at, its lower end with a rounded depending lug arranged in, the bearing recess and, pivotally connecting the latch with the casing, an inclined weighted arm extending downwardly and inwardly from the lower portion of the vertical arm at the inner side thereof and at a point above the said lug and. conforming to and arranged to rest'upon the inclined face of the tapered bottom portion; of, the casing when the vertical. arm of the latch is in position for engaging the teeth of the gear wheel to lock the sash against downward movement and an operating; handle extending outwardly from the lower, portion of the vertical; arm
