J. F. BBATTY. I GOMBINBD 'SASH HOL E AND LOOK.
APPLICATION FILE AN. 5, 1909.

COMBINED SASH HOLDER AND LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1909.
Application filed January 5, 1909. Serial No. 470,808.
isylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Sash Holder and Look, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved com bined sash holder and lock, the object of the invention being to provide improvements of this character, which can be readily secured to the lower window sash, which will efiectually hold the sash in any adjustment,
which can be easily manipulated to releasev the sash, so as to permit theraising or lowering of the same, and which can be operated to securely lock the sashes together.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter .described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1,
I is a view in elevation partly in section illus- Fig. 2, 1s an en trating my improvements. larged view in vertical section through the upper central portion of the sashes, and Fig. 3, is a detail perspective view of one of the plungers 17 1 represents an ordinary window frame, and 2 and 3 the upper and lower sashes mounted to slide therein. To the center bar 4 of the lower sash 3, the vertical mem- I her 5 of my improved attachment is secured by means of screws 6, or other fastening devices, and is preferably integral at its upper end with a cross bar 7, located against the upper cross bar 8 of the lower sash 3. The lower end of the member5 is integral with a cross bar 9, the latter located against the lower cross bar 10 of the lower sash 3.
The upper cross bar 7 is made with sockets 11, in its ends, in which coiled springs 12 are I mounted, and bear outwardly against plungers 13, the latter mounted to slide in the sockets 11, and carrying rollers 14 supported to run against the inner face of the window frame 1, and assists in holding the sash.
The lower cross bar 9 is provided with recesses 15 in its ends, said recesses extending almost to the center of the bar 9, and coiled springs 16, in the inner ends of said recesses, bear outwardly against plungers 17. These plungers 17 comprise an innerhead 18, an outer friction block 26, and a connecting rod 19, which latter connects the inner head with an outer friction block 20, the latter tightly pressed against the inner face of the window frame, securely holds the sash against accidental movement.
To the inner heads 18 of the plungers 17, finger holds 21 are secured, and are movable in slots 22 in the bar 9, so that they can be grasped by the operator, moved inwardly to release the friction blocks from engagement with the frame and serve as lifters to raise and lower the lower sash;
On the upper cross bar 7 at the center of the lower sash, a casing 23 is made integral with the bar 7, and houses a coiled spring 241, which bears against a plunger 25 carrying a roller 26, the latter adapted to run upon the center bar 27 of the upper sash 2, and frictionally hold the sashes in engagement with each other. On the top of this casing 23, bearings 28 are provided for a sliding bolt 29, the latter adapted to enter a recess in the bar 27, when the sashes are in closed posi tion, and securely lock them closed.
In operation, assuming the bolt 29 is drawn back, the finger holds 21 are moved inwardly toward each other, to release the friction block 20 from engagement with the frame 1, when the lower sash can be raised and lowered. lVhenever the finger holds are allowed to spring outward, the sash will be held in that position. YVhen the sash is moved to closed position, and the bolt 29 forced into socket 30 in the bar 27 the sashes will be thoroughly locked.
Slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a window frame, and a sash mounted to slide therein, of a bar secured to the center vertical bar of the window sash, cross bars at the ends of said first mentioned bar secured against the sash, sockets in the ends of said cross bars, springpressed plungers in said sockets, rollers carried by the plungers in the upper cross bar in engagement with the window frame, friction blocks carried by the lower cross bars in engagement with the window frame, springs forforcing said friction blocks outwardly, and finger holds projecting outside of the bar and'adapted for drawing back the friction blocks from engagement with the frame 2. In combination with a window frame, upper and lower sashes mounted in said frame, cross bars secured to the lower sash at the top and bottom thereof, spring-pressed plungers in both ends of said cross bars, rollers on the upper pair of plungers in engagement with the window frame, friction blocks on the lower pair of plungers in engagement with the window frame, finger holds onsaid lower pair of plungers, and a locl: carried by said upper cross bar and adapted to lock with the vertical center bar of the upper sash.
3. In combination with a window frame, upper and lower sashes mounted in said frame, cross bars secured to the lower sash at the top and bottom thereof, springpressed ilungers in both ends of said cross bars, rollers on the upper pair of plungers in engagement with the window frame, friction blocks on the lower pair of plungers in engagement with the window frame, finger holds on said lower pair of plungers, a casing located centrally on the upper cross bar, a spring-pressed plunger in said casing, a roller on said plunger engaging the central bar of the upper sash, and a sliding bolt on said casing constructed to enter a recess in the central bar of the upper sash and lock the sashes together.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN F. BEATTY.
