SASH-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1907.
Application filed July 19, 1906. Serial No. 326,893.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DELL It. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arlington, in the county of Snohomish and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in window sash holders and fasteners, and consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical device of this character, by means of which a window sash or the like may be held at any desired elevation and securely locked in either its opened or closed position.
The above and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window frame, with parts in section, showing the application of my improved sash holders and fasteners; Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view through one of the devices, on an enlarged scale; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device removed from the window sash; and Figs. 4 and 5 are views of the two wear plates.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings, I employ four of my improved holding and fastening devices 1, but a greater or less number may be used. As shown, one is provided in each of the two upper corners of the upper window and sash 2, and one in each of the two lower corners of the lower window sash 3. They are set in sockets or recesses 4 formed in the side edges of the sashes and each comprises a metal frame consisting of side plates 5, connecting top and bottom plates 6, 7 which diverge as shown and have their ends bent to form apertured attaching flanges 8, which are secured by screws or the like in recesses in the side edges of the sashes. The side plates 5 are formed with alining slots 01' openings 9, which are inclined downwardly and have in the upper walls of their lower ends, notches or seats 10 forming thereby bayonet slots. The slots 9 are adapted to receive the pivot 11 of a locking bolt 12, which is arranged to swing between the top and bottom plates 6, 7. The pivot 11 is formed near its inner end with a rectangular portion 13 to enter a similar shaped recess in the bolt 12 in order to lock the latter thereto, and its outer end extends through an opening in the front of one of the sashes and a slot 14 formed in a rail plate 15 secured upon the outer face of the sash the slot 14 corresponding in size and inclination to the slots 9. The outer end of the pivot 11, which serves both as a pivot and an operating means for the dog 12, s provided with a finger piece or knob 16.
The provision of the slots or recesses 9, 10 and the slots 14, which are similar in shape, permit the bolt 12 to have both swinging and a sliding movement in the frame of the device. The bolt 12 is forced normally upward toward thetop plate 6, by a coil spring 16, which is secured to its bottom and is adapted to slide upon the bottom plate 7. The bolt 12'is of such length that its outer end, on which is provided a tip 17 of rubber or the like, will lie within the vertical plane of the attaching flanges 8 when the bolt is swung downwardly against the bottom plate 7, so that the window sash may be raised'and lowered without the tip 17 engaging the sides 18 of the window frame 19. When the free end of the bolt 1.2 is swung upwardly with the pivot 11 as a center, its tip is adapted to swing out of the frame and to engage the sides 18 of the window and thereby prevent movement of the window sash until after the end of the bolt has been swung downward, as will be readily understood. The wedging action of the bolt which iscaused by locating the pivot point above the tip is sufficient to prevent the window sashes from dropping and will hold them at any desired elevation; but in order to more effectively lock them in their closed position, I form in the side portions 18 of the window frame, openings 20 to receive the outer ends of the bolts 12 when the latter are projected by sliding their pivots 11 outwardly in the slots 9. These openings 20 are preferably protected by apertured wear plates 21 secured upon the sides 18, by screws or the like. The bolts 12 may be readily projected by engaging the knobs 16 and moving the pivot shafts or rods 11 downwardly, until they are forced upward by the coil springs into the notches or seats 10, which latter will thus hold the bolts in their projected positions. In order to more effectively retain the bolts 12 of the fasteners on the lower sash 3, in their locked positions, that is, to prevent them from slipping endwise out of the openings 20 in the window frame I form in theupper faces of their outer ends, notches 22, which are adapted to engage the flattenedupper walls of the apertures in the plates 21, as shown in the drawings.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without out of engagement with said shoulder, and a spring departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. In a sash fastener, a frame having its bottom inclined and each side provided with an inclined shouldered slot, a bolt in the frame adjacent to the bottom with a pivot at its inner end in said slots and adapted to be moved therein, the free end of the bolt being adapted to be projected beyond the lower end of the bottom of the frame, and means on the pivot for actuating the bolt.
2. In a sash fastener, a frame having each side provided with an inclined shouldered slot, a bolt having a pivot at one end adapted to be moved in said slot and into and for normally forcing the bolt upward.
3. In a sash fastener, a frame having each side provided with an inclined shouldered slot and the top and bottom provided with perforated flanges, the bottom of the frame being inclined to correspond with the slot, a bolt in the frame, a pivot for the bolt, the outer end of which is provided with a knob, and a spring in the bolt adapted to rest and be moved upon said bottom.
4. In a sash fastener, a frame having its sides provided with shouldered slots, a bolt pivotally mounted in said slots, the forward end of which is shouldered and adapted to engage with a perforated plate.
