ENVELOP MOISTENING AND SEALING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VINCENT KUBLIN, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelop Moistening and Sealing Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an envelop moistening and sealing device, and the primary object of my invention is the provision of simple and effective means, as will be hereinafter set forth, for supplying a fluid to a moistening pad, holding the flap of an en velop in engagement with said pad while said envelop is moved, and then sealing the moistened flap of the envelop, the above operations being accomplished in an expeditious manner.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the above type consisting of comparatively few parts, durable and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is intended.
With the above and other objects in'view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a device in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a portion of the device.
The reference numeral 1 denotes a cylinder that is used in a vertical position, said cylinder having the lower end thereof closed, as at 2 and provided with anextension 3 that is rectangular in plan, said extension having the top thereof provided with a recess 4 to receive a pad 5. The recess 4 is in communication with the cylinder 1 through the medium of an opening 6 whereby a fluid within the cylinder 1 can flow and be forced into the pad 5. The bottom of the extension 3 is provided with parallel grooves 7 and revolubly mounted in said grooves are rollers 8 that protrude below the bottom of the extension 3.
The open end of the cylinder2is exteriorly screw threaded, as at 9 and provided with a detachable cap 10, said cap having a boss 11 provided with an openingil2 in which is loosely mounted a piston rod 13. The inner end. of said rod has a piston head 14 provided with packing rings 15 engaging the inner walls of the cylinder 1. The upper end of the piston rod 13 has a knob 16 and encircling said piston rod, between said knob and the boss 11, is a coiled retractile spring 17 that retains the piston rod 13 normally elevated relatively to the cylinder 1.
The front side of the cylinder 1 has brackets 18 and 19. Movably mounted in the bracket 18 is a push rod 20 having the lower end thereof connected to a roller bearing 21 slidably mounted in the bracket 19. The roller bearing 21 supports a single revoluble roller 22 directly above the central portion of the pad 5, said roller bearing being held normally in an elevated position by a coiled retractile spring 23 that has one end thereof connected to the bracket 18 and the opposite end thereof to the roller bearing 21. The upper end of the push rod 20 has a hook or handle 24:, whereby said push rod can be easily raised and lowered. Mucilage or water can be placed in the cylinder 1 and with the piston rod 13 loosely mounted in the boss 11, sutficient air is admitted to the cylinder 1 for the piston head 14 to'be moved therein. The mucilage or paste can be forced through the opening 6 on to the pad 5, which is preferably made of felt or other absorbent material. With the pad 5 saturated, an envelop flap is placed upon the pad, the roller bearing 23 lowered to place the roller 22 in engagement with the envelop flap, and then the envelop is moved whereby the flap will be moved between the pad 5 and the roller 22 and moistened or coated with mucilage. The roller bearing 23 is then released, the envelop flap removed from the pad, said flap closed, and then the device moved over the flap with the roller 8 bearing upon the flap to seal the same.
The rollers and the packing rings can be made of rubber, and the remaining parts, with the exception of the pad 5, made of light and durable metal.
What I claim is:--
An envelop moistening device comprising a receptacle constituting a reservoir and having its lower end formed with a rectangular extension provided with a recess, a moistening pad mounted in said recess, said receptacle provided with an opening for establishing communication between the recess and the receptacle, a pair of vertically alining spaced brackets secured to the outer face of the receptacle, said brackets disposed centrally with respect to said extension, a spring controlled push rod mounted in said brackets and having an enlarged lower end formed with a pair of bearings, said enlarged lower end disposed centrally with respect 10 to said pad, :1 bearing roller having its ends journaled in said bearings and positioned cent-rally with respect to said pad, and a handle at the upper end of said push rod.
