FOUNTAIN-FEED FOR MOISTENING AND SEALING DEVICES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,081, dated February 10, 1891.

Be it known that I, PHILIP J. SOHREIBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, county of Montgomery, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Fountain-Feed forMoistening and Sealing Purposes, in Combination with Pen and Pencil Holders. of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to pen and pencil holders combined with a fountain or self-feed tank supplied with water or other liquid for keeping a sponge or other substance moist at all times, so that it may readily be used for moistening envelopes or other things upon which an adhesive substance is used, which requires moistening before being closed to be sealed by the sealer attached to the holder. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view with pen and pencil extended, showing seal attachment. Fig. 2 is a vertical view showing the inside arrangement of the parts closed, with pen and pencil holder detached. Fig. 3 is also a vertical View with a sponge extended ready for use. Fig. 4 is a view of that part of the inside arrangement, showing jaws f f and disk h. Fig.5 is the fountain or tank which holds the water orliquid. Fig. 6 is aview of the locket or sealer with section of holder A.

My invention consists of a hollow tube A,

with a slot 1) on one side, extending a short distance upward from the lower end. The upper and lower ends of the tube A may be threaded or telescoped together. An air vent d is provided in the upper thread. Thimbles c with corresponding threads are used or may be used upon the ends of the tube, as shown in the figures. A short distance from the upper end of the tube and partly encircling it is made fast a smooth surface oval-shaped locket attachment B, which may be made in a solid piece or in the form of a locket provided with a receptacle for holding postage-stamps, opened by means of a lid or slide.

On the inside of the tube A, I have arranged a tank D, the upper end of which is secured to the inner walls of the tube A. I have also arranged an inner sliding tube E, provided with a disk h, which is made in two parts, each part being made fast to the inner walls of the sliding tube E at the top. This disk is provided with an orifice through which the lower end of the funnel passes. This sliding tube is provided with loose'open jaws or lips ff at its lower end. Aloose ring encircles the upper part of the jaws ff, as will more fully appear by reference to the drawings in Fig. at. A pin gis fitted into the side of the hollow tube E,which passes through the slot 1) in the outer or large tube A, which pin is intended to work through the slot to push the lips ff, which contain the sponge, forward through the opening in the end of the tube A. This tube E, made in two parts and provided with lips f f, is intended to hold a sponge or other substance in its upper as well as its lower end. It can be removed from the tube A by removing the pin 9 or taking off the thimble c.

When it is desired to use the sponge, the pen or pencil end of the holder is detached from the tube A. Then by means of the pin g the inner tube is pushed outward through the end of the tube A, and it is ready for use, as shown in Fig. 3. l/Vhen detached, the pen and pencil end may, if desired, be attached tothe opposite end upon the thread there shown atj.

\Vhen it is desired to use the sponge for moistening the gum upon an envelope, the same, after being moistened, is closed. Then the attachment B is passed over the parts, and by this means it is securely and firmly sealed.

When it is desired to fill the tank or funnel D with water, the thimble or nut 0 may be unscrewed, the tank filled, and nut replaced.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of a tube A, provided with a tank D, disk 71., hollow tube E, with lips or jaws ff, loose ring 70, and pin g, su bstantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination of a tube A, provided with a tank D, disk 72., hollow tube E, having lipsff, 10086 ring 70, pin g, and attachment B, with pen and pencil holder, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
