STITCHING-GLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1912.
Application filed February 12, 1912. Serial No. 677,034.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VEsLnY S. JUDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stitching Clamps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in stitching clamps for holding articles to be stitched by hand,.in a convenient position for the work.
The object of the invention is to provide a convenient and effective clamp to be placed on the leg above the knee, in such position, that the jaws of the clamp may be tightened or relaxed in proportion to the extension of the lower portion of the leg, as will hereinafter more fully appear in the following description in connection with the accompanying drawings, of which Figure l is a side elevation of the clamp showing the same closed. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the clamp as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view showing the clamp in position for service.
In a detail description of the device, the
same reference characters indicate the same parts in the drawings and description. 1 designates a curved plate, the curvature of which conforms to the leg above the knee. This curved plate has an extension 2 extending from the upper side thereof at a central point, with an aperture therein to receive a pin 3. On opposite sides of this extended portion 2 are fulcrumed levers, the ends 4 and 5 of which extend approximately to the ends of the curved base plate 1, and are provided with apertures 6. The upper'portions 7 and 8 of said levers are curved to provide ample space between them and the jaws 9 are lengthened to provide a substantial clamping surface for the article, which is held therebetween.
In operation the curved plate 1 is placed upon the knee as shown in Fig. 3, and the strap 10 is placed below the foot, and is securely held in position by extending the lower portion of the leg. To release the jaws of the clamp for the insertion of the article to be stitched, the lower portion of the leg is moved backwardly to release the tension of the strap 10.
Having described my invention, and the manner of its use, I desire to claim:
1. A stitching clamp comprising a curved base plate adapted to fit and rest u on the knee of an operator and having a ulcrum lug extending from the upper side thereof, clamping levers pivoted to said lug, the lower portions of said levers being extended approximately to the ends of the curved base plate and the upper portions of said levers being curved and terminated in clamping surfaces extended laterally on each side of the levers, and a flexible member united to the ends of the levers and adapted,
to extend below the foot whereby the clamping levers are manipulated to hold or release the article tobe stitched.
2. A stitching clamp comprising a base plate adapted to fit and rest upon the knee of an operator, clamping members supported on said base plate, and a strap attached to the said clamping members and adapted to 1elxtend under the foot, substantially as speci- In testimon whereof I afiix mysignature,
in presence 0 two witnesses.
