PIVOT FOR DECK-SASHES.

Be it known that I, BENJMIN F. PIER- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, in the county of Newcastle and. State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pivots for Deck-Sashes, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pivots for deck sashes, the object of the invention being to'provide an improved pivot of this character which enables the sash to be readily placed in position or removed as may be desired, and which is so constructed as to hold the sash at various open positions, as well as in its closed position.
A. further object is to provide a deck sash pivot which permits the sash of the necessary adjustment so that the sash may conform to the opening in the deck, and prevent binding or sticking, which so frequently occurs.
A further object is to provide a pivot of this character which, while especially adapted for use in connection with deck sash transoms, ventilators, and similar devices, is capable of various other uses, and embodies but relatively few parts which are strong and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view, the invent-ion consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and a1- rangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a sectional perspective view illustrating my improvements showing the sash in closed position. Fig. 2, is aview in side elevation of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3, is a view in cross section through the sash and frame, and through the channel bracket l.
1, represents the deck of a car structure, and 2 a sash mounted therein. To the sash 2, a channel bracket 4 is secured preferably by screws as shown at 14, the side plates 5, 5, of which are provided in their upper edges with relatively large recesses 3, the corners of which are rounded as shown at 16 forming bearings which are adapted to turn on a journal pin 7. This journal pin 7 is fixed through a notched segment 8, which lies normally between the side plates 5, 5, with the journal pin 7.projecting at Specification of Letters Patent.

In notches 17 in plates 5, trunnions 18 at opposite sides of a lever 11 are fulcrumed. This lever 11 is bent at its upper end formlng a tooth 10 adapted to engage in the notches 9 of the segment 8, and normally pressed into tight engagement with said segment by means of a flat spring 13 secured to channel bracket 1.
The spring-pressed lever in the notches 9 operates somewhat as a ratchet, yet the movement is permitted in both directions by reason of the shape of the lever.
In the drawings, the sash is illustrated in closed position, and it will be seen that by reason of the pressure of spring 13, it is tightly held in its closed position. When it is desired to open the sash, the latter is swung with the journal 7 as a pivot. This causes the lever 11 to move from one notch 9 of the segment 8 into the next, and so on, and in any position spring 13 will holdthe sash. against accidental movement.
l l hile I above state that the plate 1-2 was secured to the frame 1-, as a matter of fact, it is not secured directly to the frame 1, but to a block 20 interposed between the plate and the frame, and the upper end of this block is rounded in thearc of a circle, concentric with the journal 7, so that the transom is supported on the edge of this block 20, and is prevented from any radial movement toward its journal, thereby insuring its proper relationship at all times.
To prevent the lever 11 from swinging entirely out of the bracket when the sash is removed. the trunnions 18 of said lever are preferably elliptical or elongated transversely, so that the pivotal movement of the lever is limited in the notches 17.
As the notched segment 8 is of appre ciably less thickness than the space between the plates 5 5 of angle bracket at, the sash is permitted the desired amount of endwise adjustment to prevent binding, and the sash may therefore be positioned in the frame to the best possible advantage.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as'fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, comprising a notched segment adapted to have a fixed relation to a frame, a journal pin projecting at opposite sides of said segment, a bracket adapted to be secured to the face of a sash and having parallel plates projecting outward from the sash, said plates having relatively large recesses in their upper edges, the outer walls of said recesses at the inner ends of said walls curved forming bearings receiving said pin, a pivoted lever in said bracket engagingthe segment, and a spring exerting pressure on said lever, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a frame, and a sash therein, of a plate secured to the frame, a notched segment spaced from said plate, pins rigidly securing said segment to said plate, one of said pins projecting beyond the segment at both sides and forming a journal pin, a bracket secured to the sash, said bracket having parallel plates projecting outward from the sash, said plates having relatively large recesses in their upper edges, the outer walls of said recesses at the inner ends of said walls curved forming bearings engaging the journal pin, and a springpressed lever in said bracket engaging the notched segment, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character described,
' a notched segment adapted to have a fixed said lever, said notched segment positioned in the said bracket, whereby a space is provided at both sides of the segment permit-- ting longitudinal movement of the sash relative to said segment, and blocks secured to said frame against which the sash moves, maintaining the sash in the proper arc of movement as it is opened and closed, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a frame, and a sash therein, of a segment spaced from the frame and having a fixed relation thereto, a journal pin projecting at opposite sides of said segment, an angle bracket secured to the sash and having notched parallel members engaging the journal pin, a lever pivoted in said bracket, and having a tooth en gaging the notches of the segment, a spring in said bracket pressing said lever against the segment, notches in the side plates of said bracket, and elliptical trunnions on said lever mounted in said notches whereby the pivotal movement of the lever is limited, substantially as described.
5. .The combination with a frame, and a sash therein, of a segment spaced from the frame and having a fixed relation thereto, a journal pin projecting at opposite sides of said segment, an angle bracket secured to the sash and having notched parallel members engaging the journal pin, a lever pivoted in said bracket, and having a tooth engaging the notches of the segment, a spring in said bracket pressing said lever against the segment, notches in the side plates of said bracket, elliptical trunnions on said lever mounted in said notches whereby the pivotal movement of the lever is limited, said notched segment positioned in the said bracket, whereby a space is provided at both sides of the segment permitting longitudinal movement of the sash relative to said segment, and blocks secured to said frame against which the sash moves maintaining the sash in the proper arc of movement as it is opened and closed, substantially as described.
