Be it known that I, JOHN WEBB, a citizen ofthe United States, residing atChicago, `in the countyof Cook and State4 of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful- Improvements in Hinges for Tilting Sash, of whichthe following is a specification.
ln tilting sash and particularly in that Y type adapted to close automatically to prevent the spreading Iof fire it is usual to provide a stop for limiting the angular swing of the sash and many forms` of construction 1 have been suggested` for this purpose.
Where the frame and sash are made of metal, however, such stop, if formed as an integral part of the window construction, as a lip or an olfset therefrom, is of insuflicient rigidity and strength and is often associated witha weakening ofthe frame or sash.
The objects of the present invention are to provide a stop construction of great rigidity and strength, unyielding and not subject to malformation or` other injury `by the rough usage to which thestops are subjected in the hasty or careless opening and inthe violent closing of suchwindows as when in case of fire or other emergency the retaining rmeans is released and the sash allowed to slam to a'closed position. Preferably, with these 'objects in view, the stop is independentof the frame or sash, is firmly attached thereto, and is of heavy` solid `construction such as cast metal, serving 'the function of and assisting toclose the sash by its own weight as well as to limit the opening and closing movement.. and to relieve the window of the jar incident thereto.

The plates13 and 16 being securely clamped in assembled relation with each other and with the front wall of the frame by means of nuts '17, :17 threaded upon the inner ends 0f the bolts 15.

The plate 18 has cast as an integralpart thereof atrunnion 22 having a cylindricalfjournal 23gadapted to iit within'the journal bearing 14 and also having beyond lthe cylindrical portion a'squared portion 24 and beyond that a reduced threadedvportion 25 toreceive the nut'26. Theend face of the trunnio'n is flattened at 27 in order to facilitate the adjustment of the same 23. Immediately alongside the plate 13, the front wall of the window lframe 11, and also the reinforcing plate 16 are slotted at 28, the slot 28 lying-in a plane with the squared portion 24 of the trunnion.
A stop arm 29has at one end a square opening by means of which it is mounted upon the squared portion 24 of the trunnion' soas to be' firmly fixed against relative anguiar movement and to swing with the sash in the tilting of the latter. Throughout the greater portion of its length the arm is flattened or narrow as shown at 30, while the closed position.
