EDGAR SHOCK, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, .ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO HORACE FfCLARK, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
DOOR-CHECK 'Specification of Letters latent. I Patented Jan. 28, 1913.
Application lcdlunie 8.,.1912. Serial No. 702,521.
' To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, EDGAR SHOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at .l/Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented new anduseful Improvements in Door-Checks, of Which-the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for use partlcularly on doors, gates'. and other clo-- snres,'and constructed to close the door or' other closure by spring action.
In carrying the invention into effect I provide a spring check which comprises cooperating surt'aces associated with the respective hinged members, one of the surfaces at least being'oblique and one yieid- 'ingly or spring mounted, the surfaces being arranged to engage and ride one upon. the other so as to constitute a checic The invention consists. in the novel construction and arrangement of parts of a door check hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, to which ret'- erence may be had for a more complete un derstanding of the invention.
In the drawings, Ffgure 1 is a face view of a device made in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing one member opened to ninety degrees; Fig. 3 is a* similar view showing one member entirely open;4 and Fig. 4 is a plan view7 on a reduced scale, showing in whole lines the device in Fig. 2 positinn, and in dotted lines the Figs. 1 and 3 positions.
Referring to the drawings, A and E indicate the portions of two members adapted to be secured one to the door and theother to they door frame, or to other parts which are to be operated upon by the check. Of these members, A is provided with lugs a, a', and member B is provided with lugs o, b', each lug being provided with a perforation for the reception of pivot or hinge pin C by which the members are pivotally connected together, Lugs a, a are spaced apart from ;each other :for the pur ose hereinafter referred to, and lugs Z), b are located toward 'the upper and lower ends of late B preferably so as to be spaced from iiigs a, a these latter spaces being provided for springs D, D', one end of each spring bearing against or engaging plate A and the other end engaging or bearing against plate B.
E, E" represent movable abutments slidingly mounted upon pivot pin C, and located preerably between lugs a and o. These movable abutments are connected with. plate B, preferably Vby having their ends project into a slot or channel b2 on the inner edge of plate B. y
The two members hinged together as above described move in conjunction with cooperating cam surfaces, one of these surfaces being obliqueto the line of motion of the hinged members when the members are moved upon their pivot. These surfaces are represented at e, which is shown as the principal oblique surface, and e the other cooperating surface. These coperating sur faces are shown in duplicate, one pair being upon lug a land abutment E, and the other pair being upon lug a" and abutment E. lhe abutments E and E are yieldingly or spring mounted, preferably by an interposed. spring F which is Vcompressed when the abutments are moved toward each other.
The slot or channel b2 may beutilized for the reception of the eudai of spring D, and the end cl2 of spring D.
It is not intended that the structure shown 'and described should constitute alhinge for Vith the parts in the positions shown in Fig. 1l, the door or other closure is in its closed position, spring F being compressed. Willen the door is opened the outward edge of surfaces e moves downwardly along inclines ev of 'movable abutments E Vund E', permitting sprin F4 to expand until when the 'door is 1n tie redetermined position, Jr'or instance ninety egrees, as shown in Fig. 2, spring F will be fully expanded and any movement of the door beyond this angle will cause a disengagement of the coperating surfaces e, e. When the door is opened all the way back, as shown in Fig. 3, or is opened farther than the redetermined angle, the coperating sur aces will no lonver exert ressure upon each other.
when the door starts to close, under the action ,of springs D, or under any other loc influence, its movement Will be unmpeded until it haspassed a predetermine-d angle,-
say ninety degrees in the instance illustrated, When vthe eoperating surfaces will be en gaged, and by surfaces c riding-upon inclined surface c Will move themovable abutments against the action of spring F in orderl te check the movement of the door during the latter portion of its closing. A
Of course the'arrangemen-t of the'surf'aces and the strength of the various springs Will be made to conform to requirements. That is, `Jthe surfaces may be arranged to engage' during a greater or less proportion of the closing movement of the door. It will also be obvious that numerous other changes 1n proportion, and arrangement of parts may be made Without departing from the'scope of the invention.
Having described my invention, What-I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l, A door cheek comprising hinged meml. bers, a pair of movable abutments slidinglymountedupon the pivot of said hinged members andfsplined toone'member, a spring between said abutments, for pressing the same in opposite directions said movable abut` ments and the other member provided with.
cooperating surfaces one of which is of considerable extent and inclined to the line of motion ofthe other surface se as to resist the closing-motion of the movable.member, said movable'abutrnents being spaced Vbetween the surfaces cooperating therewith, so
as to be lifted idly by one of the cooperating surfaces during the first part of the closing then compressed movement and said spring to checkthe closing movement.
2. A door checlr comprismg hinged mem-f .on said lugs so as to resist by compression of said1 spring theV closing motion of the mow able member.
3. A doorcheck comprising hinged members one of which has perforated end lugs for the pivot,'a pair of movable abutments slidingly mounted upon the pivot of said hinged members and splined to the member having end lugs, a spring between said abut-- -ments forpressing the same in opposite directions, the other member having a perfo'. rated lug upon each side of saidv movable abutments and spaced from the end lugs of the Ifirst member, said movable abutments and the second pair of lugs provided with cooperating surfaces of which one is of con- Asiderable extent and inclined to the line of motion of the other surface so as to resist the closing motion of the. movable. member, a
pivot pin passing through said lugs, and
springs on said pin between eachend lng and the adjacent inner lug and bearing on. said members to cause the closing motion.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
