Description

G. M. VORIS.
CARTON.
APPLIGATION FILED DBO. a, 1910.
1,030,949, Patented July 2, 1912.
M T/vEssEs: 17v VEN To STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE M. VORIS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CARTON.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. Vonrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartons, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to cartons, and more particularly to that type of carton designed to hold simple confections, such as pop-corn and peanuts, being for this purpose rendered air-tight and moisture-proof.
The object of my present invention is to provide a novel and simple construction for enhancing the value of the package in the eyes of children, to whom the great majority of the sale of this article is made. I attain this object by the production of a carton, which constitutes a noise making toy either before or after removal of its contents.
With the foregoing in mind my improved invention resides specifically in the features of construction and arrangement to be hereinafter described with especial reference to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is an elevation of a carton, constructed in accordance with my invention, and showing the same when completed and ready for sale. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the top removed, after the resined tape has been unfastened. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the upper portion of the finished carton, taken on line 373 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontal cross-section taken on line 4.-4c of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the lower portion of the body, taken on line 55 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to these figures, 10 represents the body of my improved carton, which is cylindrical in form and has its lower end closed. The base 11 of this body 10 is provided with a small slit, through which extends a tape 12, the inner end of which is secured fiat-wise upon one surface of a circular disk 13, the other surface of which is secured within and upon the base 11. A second disk 14 is then secured upon the first disk 13, to cover the secured end of the tape 12, and prevents any possibility of the entrance of air into the body 10 through the slits in disk 13 and base 11, from which the tape 12 extends.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 3, 1910.
Patented July 2*, 1912.
Serial No. 595,439.
Upon the upper open end of the body 10 is disposed a circularly flanged cover 15, this cover being set on to the body over a rip-cord 16, so that when it is desired to open the carton, the cover 15 may be diametrically cut by pulling either end of the cord 16 upwardly and over the carton.
The tape 12 is plentifully supplied with resin throughout its length, and as shown in Fig. 1, is of suflicient length to be passed up one side of the body 10 and over the cover 15 and down upon the opposite side of the body, the extremity of the said tape being fastened upon the latter side of the body adjacent the base 11, and in this manner serving as an additional means to hold the cover 15 in place. The body 10 and disks 13 and 14- are formed of paste board, and are thoroughly paraifined after the tape 12 is looked through the base 11, this process not only serving as a moisture and air excluding expedient, but serving also to greatly increase the noise which is produced when the tape 12 is drawn through the operators fingers.
The cover 15 is formed of the same material as the body 10, and after the contents have been placed in the carton and the cover set thereon, the carton is reversed and dipped in paraflin to a point slightly beyond the edge of the flanged cover, thus serving to prevent the entrance of moisture and air at the cover, and also to hold the cover on, assisted by the tape 12 as hereinbefore mentioned.
I claim:
A carton comprising a body having a" GEORGE M. VORIS.
Witnesses:
MYRoN G. CLEAR, ANNA M. MENGEL.
