Description

PATENTED JAN. 10, 1905.
v I. STEINER. COMBINED FLAP AND EXTENSION BAGK FOR CIGAR BOXES.
APPLIUATION FILED JULY 21,1904.
UNITED STATES Patented January 10, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE ISIDOR STEINER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 779,676, dated January 10, 1905. Application filed July 21, 1904. Serial No. 217,4.48.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISIDOR STEINER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the State, county, and city of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a (lombinedFlap and Extension-Back for Cigar- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a flap which is so formed and secured to a cigarbox that one portion formsa flap covering the cigars, while the remainder may be used to project in a direction substantially perpendicular to the bottom of the box to form a label which indicates the brand of the cigars which the box holds or other desired matter. This object is accomplished by the means hereinafter set forth.
For a more particular description of my invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cigarbox provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my improved flap ready to be inserted in a box. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Throughout the various views of the drawings similar reference characters designate similar parts.
My improved flap 1 is creased at 2 near one edge, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and is provided with a line of severance 3, which cuts off a back extension or label 4:. Thisline 3 preferably extends irregularly from one part of the crease 2 to another and is so run as to give the extension or label 4 any desj red shape. For convenience only one design is shown, although it is obvious that the precise form of design is immaterial, provided the above-mentioned conditions are fulfilled. The portion 5 between the edge and the creased line 2 is covered with paste or other suitable adhesive material.
WVhen the flap is in the condition above described and shown in Fig. 2, it may be inserted in a cigar-box 6, and preferably on the side adjacent to the cover 7, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the part 5 is gummed or otherwise fixed to the back 8 of the box 6, preferably after the box has been filled with cigars and just before it is closed for shipping. Thereafter when the box is opened and the flap 1 is raised the cigars, or some of them, may be removed from the box. The flap may then be lowered over the cigars to protect them, and the back or label 4 will remain in an upright position until the cover 7 is closed down on i My improvement is particularly applicable to cigar-boxes which are exposed in a showcase. As the room in a show-case is exceedingly limited, it is frequently the custom to remove the cover of the box, as indicated in Fig. 3 and as the boxes are crowded together it is often impossible to tell what make or brand of cigars the box holds. Under such circumstances a box provided with my improvement is very serviceable, as the back extension or label 4 may stand in the position indicated in Fig. 3, and the flap 1 may or may not be removed, as desired, when from the marking on the label ithe quality of the cigar is apparent. It is evident that the fiap 1 may be readily removed, because it will easily tear along the crease-line 2on each side or end of the extension 4:.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In an article of the class described, the body or flap 1, having an extension 4 cut therefrom adjacent one edge thereof, the flap being adapted to be severed from the ends of the extension to the outer ends of the said flap.
2. A combined flap and extension-back for cigar-boxes, comprising a sheet of suitable material provided with a crease near one edge, and a severed portion extending from the crease.
3. A cigar-box provided with a cover, and a flap fixed to said box adjacent to said cover, said flap having a severed portion, severed from a creased line in the flap, whereby when the cover is raised, the flap will extend over the contents of the box, except the severed portion, which Will project upwardly to form a label.
4:. A box provided with a flap fixed to said box, said flap having a severed portion, severed from a creased line in the flap, whereby When the box is open, theflap Will extend over the contents of the box, except the severed portion, which will project upwardly to form a label.
Signed this 15th day of July, 1904:.
ISIDOR STEINER.
