JOSEPH REIBOLIGE, OF DON ORA, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAIL-JOINT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH RnBoLren, a citizen of the United States, residing at Donor-a, in the county of \Vashington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a rail joint for releasably connecting rail ends.
To accomplish the desired result use is made of a spring-like gripping member extended from one end of one of-the rail ends and adapted to extend into an opening in the other rail end, the said gripping member being provided with looking lugs adapted to be received in recesses formed in the second rail end, a vertically extending opening being provided in the second rail end and terminating in the first mentioned opening for receiving therein a bar or other instrument adapted toengage the inner end of the gripping member to move the same upwardly and force the locking lugs out of the recesses of the second mentioned rail end to permit of disengaging the respective rail ends.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views and in which" Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device, the rail ends being in disconnected position, parts being broken away to disclose the underlying structure. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the rail ends in connected position. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 33 in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a rail end 10 having a gripping member 11 extended from one end thereof, the said gripping vmember being preferably formed of a spring-like material such as steel and provided with integral depending locking lugs 12, 13, the outermost locking lug 13 being preferably larger than the inner locking lug 12. A. rail end 14 is pro- Specification of Letters Patent.

vided with a horizontally extending open ing 15 adapted to receive therein the gripping member 11 and formed in the rail end 1 1 are recesses 16, 17, the recess 17 being adapted to receive the locking lug 13 and the recess 16 being adapted to receive the locking lug 12. A vertically extending opening 18 is provided in the rail end 14: and extends upwardly from the under side thereof, the said opening at the inner end terminating in the opening 15. Now assuming that the rail ends 10 and 14 are in the position shown in Fig. 1, when it is desired to connect the same the rail end 10 is moved toward the rail end 1 1 so that the gripping member 11 will extend into the opening 15 and owing to the spring-like action of the gripping member 11, the locking lugs 12, 13 will project into the recesses 16, 17, thus locking the rail ends 10, 141 as shown in Fig. 2. Now if it is desired to disengage the rail ends, a bar or other instrument is inserted in the opening 18 and moved vertically to engage the outer end of the gripping member 11 thus moving the same upwardly to move the locking lugs 12, 13 out of the recesses 16, 17 so that the rail end 10 can be disengaged from the rail end 14. In order to accomplish this operation the opening 15 is made of sufficient diameter to permit of an upward swinging movement of the outer end of the gripping member so that the locking lug 13 will be moved upwardly a greater distance than the locking lug 12 and for this reason the locking lug 18 is preferably made larger than the locking lug 12 as mentioned heretofore.
I claim 1- In a rail joint, the combination with a rail end provided with a horizontally extending opening and a vertically extending opening terminating at the inner end of the horizontally extending opening, of a second rail end, a spring-like horizontally extending gripping member extended from an end of the said second rail end, and locking lugs formed on the said gripping memher with the outermost looking lug of ing adapted to extend across the said vertigreater length than the innermost locking cally extending opening. 10' lug, the said gripping member being adapt- In testimony whereof I afiix my signature ed to extend into the mentioned horizontal in presence of two witnesses. 5 opening of the first mentioned rail end with JOSEPH REBOLIGE.
the locking lugs depending in recesses Witnesses: formed in the first mentioned rail end, the J. B. MARsToN, free end of the said gripping member be- 0. G. FRAZIER.
