To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ISABELLA M. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in book holders, and more particularly to that class or type which are adapted to readily and conveniently support and hold a book in an open position, while the reader is in a reclining or semi-reclining position, as in a bed, or hammock, or the like.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a generally improved device of this class of exceedingly simple, cheap, and efficient construction, better adapted to its intended purposes than any other device of the same class with which I am acquainted.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this class which can be readily adjusted to properly support and hold the particular form of book or other article to be read at a proper focal position before the eyes of the reader, and when not in use may be readily folded up so as to occupy but little space.

With the above-mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1, is a view illustrating the application and position of the improved book holder in its operative position while the reader is in a semi-reclining position. Fig. 2, a top plan view of the improved holder detached. Fig. 3, a side elevation of the same. Fig. 4, a cross sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5, an enlarged detail View of the pivoted portion of the book clamping member adjustably carried by the upper frame portion of the improved holder. Fig. 6, an enlarged detail view of the pivoted portion at the upper end of the supporting yoke.

Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.

The improved book holder comprises a supporting frame made up of side bars 1, terminating at their upper end in a supporting yoke or loop 2, adapted while in use to pass about the neck of the reader as illustrated in Fig. 1, of the drawings.

As a means for adjustably supporting and carrying the book 3, or other article to be supported, a book supporting frame 4, is provided adjustably connected to the side bars 1, and carrying a pivotally mounted book supporting member 5, the latter, in the present instance, consisting of a wire loop member pivotally secured to bearing lugs 4, of the frame and being adapted to be stopped in the position shown in the drawings, and fold downwardly when not in use. The book supporting frame '4, in the present instance, comprises tubular side members or sleeves adapted to receive and contain the side bars 1, of the supporting frame and, in the present instance, provided at its lower end with a cross bar 6, the latter being adapted to form a second point of support, as for example, as illustrated in Fig. 1, of the drawings.

As a convenient means for adjusting the book supporting frame 4, and member 5, to secure the proper focal adjustment to the eyes of the reader, the book supporting frame 4, is provided with a depending handle 7 the latter being pivotally secured to the book supporting frame 4, by means of bearing lugs 4*, said bearings lugs being provided with a shouldered portion adapted to support the handle 7 in a substantially vertical position with respect to the frame 4, and permitting of the folding of the handle 7 over the book supporting frame 4, when the holder is not in use.

As a means for clamping the book 3, in an open position, a book clamping member 8, is provided, said clamping member being pivotally and adjustably mounted upon the side bars 1, in the present instance, by means of slidably mounted bearing sleeves 9, provided with bearing lugs 59*, pivotally carrying the book clamping member 8. The book clamping member 8, in the present instance,

comprises a wire loop member having lever members 8 connected to springs 10, connected to and carried by the bearing sleeve 9. As a means for holding the book clamping member 8, in an open position, spring members 11, (see Fig. 5) are arranged on the inner sides of the bearing sleeves 9, the free ends of said spring members being adapted to snap into engagement with the rear portions of the lever members 8*, when the book clamping member 8, is drawn rearwardly to a certain predetermined point, thus permitting of the ready insertion or removal of the book or other particle to be read, "or the turning of the pages thereof.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawto said book supporting frame, a foldable spring actuated clamping member adjustably mounted on said supporting frame, and means for holding said clamping member in an open position.

2A book holder, comprising a supporting frame provided with side bars, a book supporting frame including tubular side members receiving said side bars, a book supporting loop member pivotally carried by said tubular side bars, a spring actuated clamping loop member, bearing sleeves ad- 'justably mounted on said side bars of said supporting frame and carrying said clamping loop member, and means for holding the latter in an open position.

3. A book holder, comprising side bars terminating in a supporting yoke provided with a hinged joint whereby said side bars 'may be longitudinally folded upon 'each other when detached, a book supporting frame adjustably connected to said side bars,

and a book clamping member carried by the latter in cooperativerelation to said book supporting member.
