Description

,'clarc that the following is aV full,clear,
diluted states wirr;
DAVID M. MOORE,
OE WINDSOR, VERMONT, AssreNoE 'ro EBENEZEE e.
LAMSON, or SAME PLAOE.
Letters Patent No.i102,957, (lated .May 10, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all (whom "it may concern.-
p Be it known that I, DAVID'M. MOORE, otWi-ndsor, inthe county of Windsor and in the State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in UniversalSqnare; and do hereby deand eract description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to -theletters of reference `,marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
Themature ot' my invention consists-in making the tongue of a universal square adjustable by means of slot and thumb-screw, so that the tongue can project fandbe used at pleasure on either side ofthe square.
' It, further consists in making the bracewhich supports and confines the tongue of the square of such v length that it will not interfere with the use of the tool as a center square when it is desired to ascertain with it the center of a small circle.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction' and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view;
Figure' 2 is a side'view; and
Figure 3 is a horizontal section of my square.
My presentinvention, in one oi its forms, is similar to what is'known as, Ames patent universal square. The latter consists of Va right-,angled triangle, the two sides of the right angle being equal; a bar or tongue extends from the right angle across and beyond the hypotenuse of `the triangle a convenient dist-ance, and is firmly attached to same, the tongue being so situated that one of its sides or edges y shall coincide with a line drawn from the right angle perpendicular to `the hypotenuse.
rlhe instrument is made of steel or iron, and its uses as a square are well known.
My instrument, instead of having the tongue A permanently fastened to the triangular ,frame B at the right angle and at the hypotenuse, has a Vnortise at the right angle ithrough which the tongue may slide.
The tongue A is also confined to the hypotenuse C by a bolt, a, and thumb-nut l), which bolt passes through a slot in the tongue. This' slot extends nearly to the end of the tongue, which construction permits the tongue to slide, so that it may project entirelyfrom thehypotenuse of the frame,.or. entirely from the right angle, or partly from each, and can he `fastened in either position by the thumb-nut.
My instrument has that half,ot1 the'hypoteuuse C of the frame cut away which isnot needed for the support of the tongue; This enables the centers of small circles to be ascertained with more convenience.
The advantages of -this construction of the square are, greate1r convenience of use and greater adaptability.
'Having thus fully described myinvention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- The herein-described universal square, composed of the angular frame B, with one-halt' of its hypotenusc cut away, and the slotted movable tongue, A held in place by the thumb-screw b and bolt 1a, or equivalent devices, all'. substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. 4
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of April, 1870.
' DAVID M. MOORE.
