Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 17, 1911.
Patented June 4, 1912.
Serial No. 621,603.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnssn K. RUssELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Williamson, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Wagon-Covers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to covers for wagon bodies and the object of the invention is to provide an absolutely rain proof cover, whereby the supplies or other articles carried within the wagon will be efliciently protected from inclement weather.
A further object of the invention is to construct a cover of sheet metal and to so attach'the same to the body of the vehicle or to the sides of the wagon bodies that it may be readily detached when not needed for use.
A still further object is to provide a cover having a novel frame structure, side doors and rear doors, said parts being so connected and fitted together, that the entrance of rain or snow into the wagon is prevented.
The invention consists of certain other combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and clearly specified in the appended claims.
In the drawings :Figure 1 isaside elevation of a conventional form of wagon body with my improved cover attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional-view on the line 22 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a rear end view of the cover attached to the body. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view of the rear end of the body and its hinged door, showing the same in an open position. Fig. 7 is a detail view of one of. the sliding side doors and its guide members. J
Referring to the drawings in detail, there is shown a wagon body or box 10 having side portions, forward and rear ends secured to a suitable flooring 11, and carried by suitable supporting wheels 12 which may be of any preferred form or design. Arranged adjacent the front end of the body or spaced therefrom, to allow suflicient room for the drivers feet is a seat structure 13 rearwardly of which my improved cover is disposed and secured detachably to the-sides of the wagon body.
As is shown in the drawings, the top and sides of the cover are formed of a single section of sheet material, such as metal, the top 14: being suficiently rounded to provide a drain surface so that any water discharged on to the side portions 15 will be prevented from entering the wagon body due to the fact that the lower edges of the sides which are bent upwardly to form a suitable binding as shown at 16 are extended outwardly of the sides of the body. The forward and rear ends of the top or cover forming section are also bent inwardlyin a similar manner as shown at 16 and the forward end 17 has its edges turned at right angles and secured to an arched brace 18 in conjunction with the top and side portions of the cover by means of rivets or the like 19. The braces have their lower ends extended in wardly and downwardly as shown at 20 to engage the inner faces of the side portions of the body and are detachably secured by means of bolts 21, and crank nuts 22. The forward end is also braced by a yoke member 23 which is preferably constructed of strip iron and which has its lower ends extended between the forward end 17 and its upturned bottom portion or edge which latter abuts a transverse strip 24 preferably constructed of wood and secured to the bottom 11 by means of screws or the like 25. Between this strip and the bottom is placed a felt or leather packing 26 which excludes the entrance of rain or moisture. from be neath the front end of the cover. The arched braces 18 are provided at the forward and rear end of the cover in a similar manner and at other intervals as deslred and as maybe found necessary in accordance with the length of the same. and lower portionof the sides. 15 or the section of metal forming the same is cut away to form a rectangular opening as shown at 27 so that the side edges of the frontend 17 which are secured to the forward arched braces 18 may be securely attached upon its inner face as shown and the adjacent edges of the cut away portions are turned inwardly in a similar manner as the lower end portions of the material forming the top and sides of the cover. Sliding slde doors 28 are arranged to cover the openings 27 and are provided with handles 29 for their ma- The forward nipulation, said sliding doors being mounted upon longitudinal guides 30 which are secured at their forward ends'to the arched braces 18 and at their rear ends to the sides of the cover. The upper edges of the sliding doors or sect-ions of metal forming the same are coiled around the guide rods 30 as shown at 31 so as to permit their free sliding movement withinthe longitudinal keeper guides 32 which are formed of heavy sheet metal secured to the sides and which have their lower ends turned upwardly to receive the bottom edges of the doors. Each of the doors is also provided with a cut away portion .33 adjacent'the forward and upper edges so as to permit the doors to move the full extent of the sides which have their inturned forward extremities projecting be yond the forward end of the cover, said inturned portions serving to form a weather proof joint. Inorder to limit the movement of .the sliding doors, each of the said covers is provided with a U-brace 34 upon its inner side, the upper end portions of which are coiled over .the convolute portions 3] which are slidable upon the guide rods 30 so .as to engage the lower ends of a semiarched brace '35 which are also fitted to slidably receive the upper edges of the doors. By this construction it will be apparent that as the doors are closed, the rearmost arms of the members 34 will engage the ext-remities .of the semi-arched braces 35 thus pre venting further movement of the doors whereas in theopening of the doors, the forward ends of the members 34 will engage the forward edges of the semi-arched brace at their lower ends thus limiting their movement in that direction and preventing contact of the handles 29 with the rear edges of the cut-away portions or openings over which the doors are movable. By reason of these guide members and the fact that the doors are located upon a vertical line outside of the outer faces .of the sides of the body, drippings from the top and sides of the cover will not escape into the body to destroy the articles which may be carried therein. The securing bolts 21 for the lower ends of the arched braces are also adapted to carry the guide brackets 36 which are offset at their upper ends to receive the lower and forward edges of the sliding doors andwhich at their lower ends are formed with sharpened projections or burs 37 adapted to :be driven into the sides of the body, thereby securely holding the same against pivotal movement upon the bolts .and serving to prevent outward movement of the forward ends .of the doors. Similar guides or brackets may also be secured to the sides of the bodyadjacent the rear-edgestof the openings 27 so as to hold the side portions of the .cover closely adjacent to the doors and preventing the entrance of moisture. The rear end 38 of the cover is also secured to the section of metal forming the top and sides in a similar manner as the forward end 17 and said end is provided with a central opening having inturned edges and adapted to be closed by a door 39 which is hingedly secured at its upper edge to the rear end of the cover as shown at 40 and adapted for outward movement thereon. The upper edge of the door 39 is offset inwardly and is adapted to engage the adjacent inner face of the rear end of the'cover so as to form a lap joint which with the overlapping side edges of the door form a further moisture proof cover.
A vertical guide casing 41 is secured to the inner side of the rear end of the cover and has a weight 42 movable therein and to which is attached a flexible connection 43 which extends over a pulley 44 mounted vertically thereabove and within the rear end forming section, said connection extending and being attached to the adjacent side of the door near its lower edge so as to normally hold the door in an elevated position. A transverse pin 45 is extended through the casing and adapted to limit the downward movement of the weight and the consequential vertical swing of the door. Pivotal latches 46 are also provided upon the rear end wall of the cover toretain the door in a closed position and inorder to strengthen the said portion of the cover, vertical reinforcing strips 47 are provided upon its inner side which may be further reinforced and secured to the sides of the cover by the angular braces 48.
From the foregoing description it will be readily apparent as the cover is secured to the side portions of the body by means of bolts 21 and the lever nuts 22, said cover may be readily detached when desired and it will be further apparent with the sliding doors that the forward sides of the cover andthe hinged door, connected in the man ner set forth as well as the formation of the forward and rear ends of the cover, the entrance of rain or snow within the body and cover is prevented. The cover also comprises a novel arrangement of braces which will render the same very durable in use.
I claim 1. The combination with a wagon body having side and end portions, of a cover for the body, said cover comprising a top .and sides formed .of a single section of material,
'said top portion being rounded, arched braces secured to the section of metal formmg the top and sides, said braces havlng their lower ends ofiset inwardly, means detachably securing said offset portions to the sides of the body, forward and rear end portions for the cover and a closure mounted inthe rear end.

A cover for vehicles comprising a top, braces secured to the top, sides formed by downturned portions of the top, means for detachably securing the lower ends of the braces to a wagon body, the surrounding edges of the top and sides being bent upon themselves, forward and rear ends for the cover, said ends being positioned inwardly of the forward and rear edges of the top and sides and having inturned portions secured to the braces and movable closures for the sides and rear end of the cover.
3. In a cover of the class described, the combination with a vehicle body, of a cover formed of a section of metal having downturned side portions, the top of the cover being rounded, said sides being located outwardly of the sides of the vehicle body, a forward end for the cover, said forward end extending into contact with the bottom of the body, and a transverse strip in contact with said forward end to form a moisture proof joint.
4:. In a cover having a top, sides, forward and rear ends, the combination with suitable braces therefor, of guideways secured at their forward ends to the braces, said sides having openings therethrough, covers having their upper ends engaged uponthe guideways, a U-brace adapted for limiting the movement of the covers in either direction and handles therefor.
5. In combination with a vehicle body, of a cover for the body, said cover having its top and sides formed of a single section of sheet metal, forward and rear ends for the cover having inturned edges, braces for securing said inturnecl portions of the ends to the top and side portions, guide rods secured longitudinally within the cover adjacent the forward portion thereof, slidable doors mounted upon the guide rods and movable over openings in the sides of the cover, guideways secured to said sections for receiving the lower edges of the doors when opened, a semi-arched brace having end portions in which said doors are s-lidable and U-braces secured to the inner sides of the doors, said U-braces being adapted to contact with the ends of the semi-arched brace to limit the movement of the doors in a closed or open position.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
