CURTAIN-HOLDEB/i Specification of Letters Patent.
' rammed .rune arma.
To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, SALLIE B. WALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have inventednew and useful Improvements in Curtain-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in curtain holders, the object of the invention being to provide a holder of cheap and simple construction by means of which'the cur-V tain can be swung from in front of the Window when desired2 as, forl instance for the purpose of obtaining an unobstructed current of fresh air at night through an open bedroom window.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a device which can' be readily transported and placed in position.
In Ithe accompanying drawing, Figure 1 f 1s a perspective view vof my improved holder, shown as applied to a window, showing in dotted lines its position when swung from in front of the window; Fig. 2 is a broken perspective view of the holder and the brackets therefor detached; Fig. 3 is a broken longitudinal sectional view of the upper part of the holder; Fig. 4 is a similar view of the lower art thereof; Fig. 5 is a fp the stem therefor.
Referring to the drawin 1 indicates a window frame, to the top o which-brackets 3, 4, are attached by screws through holes5 in said brackets. A bracket 6 is similarly attached to a side of said frame directly beneath the bracket 4. Each of said brackets 'comprises a lower horizontal member 7 and an upper oblique member 8, said horizontal gle piece bent so that the adjacent ends of said members are in close contact with each other said members dlverglng from said adjacent ends and having flange portions 9.
adapted to rest against the window frame and having the holes 5 aforesaid. The adjacent portions of the members 7, 8, of the brackets 4 and v6 are formed with holes 10 alined vertically to form an elongated bearing for the vertical 4member'll of an L- shaped curtain holder 12,`said holder having a horizontal member 13 extending across the window frame to the other bracket 3,
' and its endl beinghadapted to rast in a seat said tube without breaking or deforming the same, before bending the tube, I introduce a cylindrical rod 16 of Bessemer steel.
The curtain is removed from in front of the window by raising the holder 12 so as to free from the seat 14 the end of said holder which rests upon said seat, and then swinging the holder upon its vertical member as an axis. In order to conveniently so raise and swing said holder, I provide a stem 17, which may be of any convenient length, according to the height of\the window or its height above the ground, and which consists of a strip of brass or other suitable s ring metal, which is bent double in the middle, as shown at 19, the two halves thereof being formed each into a half cylinder, so that they together form a cylinder, the diameter of said cylinder being slightly less than the internal diameter of the tube 12. Theend of said'stem is inserted in said tube and the two halves of the stem are pressed together so as to permit said'stem to pass indentations 20 formed in the tube 12, which indentations c'an register with similar indentations 21 formed in the two parts of the stem. 4llVhen said indentations so register, said two parts of the stem spring apart and the stem is thereby secured in the holder.
To give a proper finish to the device, into the other end of the tube 12 which rests in the seat 14 I preferably insert, a knob 22 formed in like manner with the stem 17.
From the above description it will be seen that, by means of my invention, I provide a light, strong curtain rod that may be swung out from the window by means of a readily removable extension and without handling the curtain itself; that said rod will retain its horizontal position when said extension is removed; that said rod will extend in a horizontal position without sagging at any point in the arc in which it is swung; and that said rod may be readily removed from its supporting brackets without tools of any kind, when it is desired to clean or change able bracket to support the rod.
I claim In combination with a frame, two brackets secured on one side of said frame having apertures in vertical alinement, an
5 L-shaped tubular Curtain holder having a horizontal member extending across the frame and a vertical member passino through said apertures, a short metal rod bent at right angles inside the tubular 10 holder :1t the bend thereof, and a vertical stem .detaohably secured to the lower end of said vertical member. i
In testimony whereof- I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
