LEE 0. GARRAWAY AND HERMAN T. HAASE, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
WINDOVJ' SHADE AND CURTAIN FIXTURE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LEE O. GARRAVAY and HERMAN T. I-Lmsn, citizens of the United States. residingat Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vindow Shade and Curtain Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved window shade and curtain fixture for supporting a shade roller and curtain pole, the said invention consisting in the construction, com
bination and arrangement of devices here inai'ter described and claimed.
One object of our invention is to effect means whereby the various parts of the fix ture may be made from blanks of sheet metal at very low cost.
A further object of the invention is to provide a curtain fixture of this character which is extremely cheap and simple and is also extremely strong and durable.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a plan of a blank from which the main portion of the curtain rod supporting bracket is made. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the curtain rod supporting bracket made from the blank. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the blank from which the combined base member and the shade roller support is formed. Fig. a is a perspective of the base member or shade roller support made from said blank. Fig. 5 is a perspective View showing a modified form of the base member. Fig. 6 is an elevation partly in section of the fixture with the parts assembled. Fig. 7 is a detail section on the plane indicated by the line aa of Fig. 6.
Our improved curtain fixture comprises essentially a base member 1 and a curtain pole supporting bracket 2. The base member is made from a single piece of sheet metal which is first formed in the flat blank such as shown in Fig. 3 and provided with a horizontal arm 3 and a vertical arm 4 which extends upwardly from the inner end of the horizontal arm. The outer end of the horizontal arm is enlarged and rounded as shown and provided with an opening 5 of suitable shape for the reception of one of the end spindles or journals of a shade roller. The arm 1 is bent at right angles to the horizontal arm 3 as indicated by the dotted lines 7 and is bent outwardly a slight distance on a horizontal line indicated at 8 and Specification of Letters Patent. Patented X 1g 3O 1910,
Application filed Dctcber 19, 1909.
Serial No. 523,386.
- bent upwardly on a parallel line indicated at 9 'so that the upper portion of the said vertical arm is offset from the lower portion thereof as indicated at 10 in Fig. 1. The vertical arm is provided at a suitable point with a fitted screw 6 to enable the base member to be screwed to a window casing at a suitable point without the use of tools and the said arm 4: is also provided near its lower end with an opening 6 through which a nail or screw may be driven into the window casing to prevent pivotal movement of the base member.
In the modified construction of the base member shown in Fig. 5, the arm 1* includes a bend or angle 1 so that the upper offset portion of said arm is out of line with the lower portion thereof.
The blank 11 from which the curtain pole supporting bracket is formed comprises essentially a relatively narrow parallel sided arm 12 at the inner end of which is a broadened squared portion 13, the sides of which project beyond opposite sides of the said arm 12 and are for a suitable distance from their upper ends divided therefrom by slits 17 and cross slits 17 The outer end portion of the arm 12 is curved in substantially semi-circular form to provide a bearing 14: for the reception of one end of a curtain pole and the broadened inner end portion 13 is bent downwardly at right angles to the arm 12, the latter when the fixture is in position being horizontal. The line on which the inner end portion 13 is bent is indicated at 15 of Fig. l. The said broadened inner end portion 13 then has its projecting sides bent rearwardly on parallel lines indicated at 16 and then inwardly on parallel lines indicated at 17, and which are spaced a slight distance from the lines or bends 16 so that the said down-turned portion of the bracket forms a vertical arm which is provided on its rear side with a channel 18 as indicated in Fig. 2. This channel is of sufficient size to enable the upper offset portion 10 of the vertical arm of the base member to be inserted therein as shown in Fig. 6 so that the said bracket is supported by and de tachably secured to the base member. The upper portions orcorners of the broadened squared portion 13 form ears 19 and having openings 20 through which screws or nails may be driven to secure the curtain pole supporting bracket directly to a window casing in the event that it is desired to use the said bracket without the base member. A brace arm 21 which is made of sheet metal is disposed under the bracket member 2 in an inclined position with its inner end riveted or otherwise secured to the lower end of the down-turned portion or bracket member 2 and its outer end riveted or otherwise secured to the under side of the arm 12.
\Vhat is claimed is 1. A window shade and curtain fixture comprising a base having a horizontal arm and a vertical upwardly extending arm offset from the plane of the base and formed with a shoulder, the said horizontal arm forming a bearing for one end of a shade roller, and a curtain rod supporting bracket having a vertically downwardly extending arm at its inner end provided with a channel in its rear side for the reception of the upper portion of the vertical arm of the base, the lower end of the bracket arm engaging the said shoulder.
2. A curtain rod supporting bracket consisting of a single piece of metal bent into angularly disposed arms, one of the arms having rod engaging means, the other arm having its opposite edges bent inwardly from opposite sides and provided with apertured lugs integrally connected to the inwardly bent portions of the said arm.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
