Description

E." BK'BENEDIGT.
Thin-Coupling.
No. 10,279. I Tatented Nov. 29, 1853 UNITED! STATES PATENT oration.-
E. B. BENEDICT, OF CLINTON, NEWV YORK.
COUPLING SHAFTS TO AX Es.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 10,279, dated November 29, 1853.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EPHRAIM B. BENE- DICT, of the town of Clinton, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Coupling for Fastening Shafts and Poles to Carriages and other Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construct-ion and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of the clip; Fig. 2, a perspective View of the tumbler, and Fig. 3, a perspective view of the draft iron.
A, A, in Fig. 1, represents the shank of the clip; B, B, B, the eye or cylinder of the clip.
O, O, in Fig. 2, represent the end. of the tumbler, and D, D, the slot of the tumbler.
D, E, E, E, in Fig.3, represents the eye of the draft iron and T, T, the shank of the draft iron.
The shank of the clip (A, A,) is fastened to the axle and the bed, from below, by a grip passing over the bed and axle in the ordinary way. The tumbler (Q) is placed inside of the eye of the clip (B, B, B,) and revolves therein as in a socket. The slot of the tumbler (D, D,)- is placed downward,
serted in the eye of the draft iron (D, E, E,
and adjusted to the openingin the eye of the clip. The eye of the clip is then in- E,) with the draft iron in a perpendicular position so that when the draft iron is drawn up the end D, enters the slot of the tumbler. The draft iron is then turned forward to a horizontal position, the tumbler being thus made to revolve in the eye of the clip, so that the slot is-turned away from the opening in the eve of the clip, thereby securing the draft iron in its place.
The end of the shank (T, T,) is to be extended at pleasure and fastened to the shaft or pole in the ordinary Way.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The coupling consisting of the combina 7 tion of the clip, tumbler and draft iron, con:
structed and arranged as above described for the purpose of a secure and expeditious attachment of the shafts or pole to carriages 1 and other vehicles. 7 r
' In w tness whereof I. havehereunto sub- EPHRAIH B. BENEDICT.
