JOHN FARMER, OF ROOKPORT, OHIO.
Letters lilaltent'No. 102,7
92,- dataz May 1o, 1ero.
I, JOHN FARMER, of Rockport, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention Vrelates to an improvement in washing-machines, and consists of two rollers worked inconjunct-ion with' each other by means of gear-wheels, the rollers having one-half of their circumference covered with sponge, or similar suitable material, and the other half flnted or corrugated in the form of a wash-board. The rollers are arranged in relation to each other so that the sponge side of the one comes' in contact with the fiuted side of the other, alternately, in each revolution.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view.
- Figure `2 is a longitudinal section.
A represents a box, nade of wood, and-of suitable dimensions, for containing the water for cleansing.
B and O are rollers placed across the box, near to one end, leaving suicient room at the other for the convenience of getting into it.-l
The rollers have their bearing secured in thc sides of the box.
Outside of thebox, and placed ou the shafts ofthe rollers, arcgear-wheels b c, which operate them.
There is, also, a ily-wheel, D, on the shaft. of the roller B, having a handle, d, for turning the same.
These rollers B and C are made, aswill be seenin section in g. 2, with one-half 'of the circumference fluted 0r corrugated, and which corrugated surface may be covered with zinc or not, as may be deemed necessary. -This surface forms a'semicircular wash-board- 'The opposite vsides of the rollers'are provided with sponge, which is secured by cords andl staples in any suitable manner.
Any other like substance may be used instead of sponge, but I prefer sponge because it 'most' readily absorbs water, and is softer and more flxible, and not liable to injure or wear the fabric being washed.
.Over the rollers B C is al roller or bar, E, placed iu bearings e e in the frame f f, said roller havipg a crank, h. This ba-r or roller-is designed for winding any long or large articles upon. One end of said article is passed between the rollers B C, when the roller E may be held from-turning, the rollers B O playing .upon the fabric, alternately rubbing it, very muchv in the manner of hand-washing on a washboard. When a portion has been rubbed the roller E is permitted to revolve, and the fabric is conveyed between the rollers, and when a dirty portion requires rubbing the roller is'held-from turning, and may be heldvuntli vthe part has been thoroughly cleansed. '.Small articles which would not reach the roller E hand and rubbed.
I claim `as my invention- The rollers B and O, constructed 'as'described, and arranged in combination with the bar or roller E, gearwheels b c, Wheel D, and box A, to. operate as and for the purpose set forth.
