FOLDING BOX.
Specification of Lettersvlatent.
Patented May 21, 1912.
Application filed July 27, 1911. Seria-.l No. 640,839.
. tools, the box being so constructed that it .may be conveniently Ipacked in a small s ace.
pAdditional objects ofthe invention will appear in the following complete specification, in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed. i
In the drawings similar characters of ref* erence indicate corresponding parts in all the views, in which- Figure 1 is ka Yperspective view of the invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation with one of the end members folded against the bottom member, and one of the'side members disposed in the same plane with the bottom member. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the box in folded position, and secured in po sition for packing; Fig. Llis a sectional view showing the means for holding the terminals of the handle to the end members; Fig. 5 is a side sectional elevation of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 6--6 of Fig. 7 and Fig. 7 is a sectional View on the line 7w7 of Fig. 6.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that a bottom member 5 is provided, and that two side members 6 are normally disposed on the top of the said bottom member 5, one at each side. Hinges 7 are provided by means of which the said side members 6 are hinged to the bottom of the bottom member 5, so that they may be turned outwardly, and under the bottom member, when it is desired to fold the box. End members 8 are disposed on the bottom member 5, to the top ofwhich they are connected by the hinges9. To the outer sides of the end members 8 are secured plates 10, having outwardly disposed flanges Y 11. Plates 12 are secured around the ends of the side members 6, the inner sides of the said plates 12 being spaced from the inner sides ofthe side member 6, so that in this space may be disposed the flanges 11, when the sides and ends of the box are erected as vshown in Fig. -1 of the drawings.
. Y'Ihere is a recess 13 in each of the flanges 11, in which is "normally Vdisposed a boltY 14, the said bolts 14 having their terminals secured to the said bent plates 12, and extending across the space inl which the flanges 11 are,V normally disposed. 'To the inner sides -ofthe end members 8 there are secured socket members 15, eachrhaving a central opening 16, the socket members 15 being offsetr at 17 from the end members 8 so as to form a recess at each side of the central opening 17, invwhich may be disposed the lateral flanges 18 on the ferrules 19, which are secured to the terminals 2O of the handle 21. Springs 22 are secured to the end members 8 for holding the terminals 20 of the handle 21 upwardly with the lateral flanges 1S in the spaces formed by the offset portion '16 of the socket members 15.
It will be seen that when the side members 6 are raised, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the end members are also raised, the flanges 11 will be disposed lin the spaces formed between the inner sides of the side members 6 and the inner sides of the bent plates 12, `and that this will prevent the outward movement of the side members 6. As the end members are hinged at their inner sides and are disposed on the top of the bottom member 5, they abut -against the top ofthe said bottom member,and it is impossible for them to move outwardly beyond a vertical position.k The bolts 14, which are secured to the bent plates 12, and which are y disposed in the recesses 13 in the fianges 11, distribute the weight from the end members to the side members 6, when the end members are carried by the handle 21. When the side members and the end members have been raised to a vertical position as has been described, and the handle 21 is disposed with its ferrules 19 in the recess formed by the offset portions 17 of the sockets 15, the handle will be held securely to the end members, which assists in bracing the box, as
well as affording means by which it may be conveniently carried.
I-Iaving thusdescribed my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent;
` 1. In a folding box a bottom member, two side members hinged to the bottom member, two end members hinged to the bottom member and provided with sockets on their inner faces, flanges extending outwardly from the end member and longitudinally of the box, plates on the side members extending around the flanges, and a handle having terminals normally disposed in the sockets in the end members for holding the end members away from each other.
2. In a folding box a bottom member, two side members normally resting on the top of' the bottom member, and hinged to the bottom of the bottom member, two end members hinged to the top of the bottom member, flanges on the end members, plates on the side members for engaging the flanges, socket. members engaging the end members, and a handle having terminals with flanges normally disposed in the sockets.
3. In a folding box a bottom member, two side members hinged to the bottom member, two end members hinged to the bottom member, and having sockets with undercut portions, flanges extending from the end members, plates on the side members extending around the flanges, and a, handle having terminals with lateral flanges nornially disposed in the under-cut portions of the sockets.
l. In a folding box a bottom member, two side members normally resting on the top of the bottom member and hinged to the bottom of the bottom member, two end members hinged to t-hevtop of' the bottom member, and having 'sockets with under-eut portions, flanges on the end members, plates on the side members normally disposed around the flanges, and a handle having terminals with lateral flanges normally disposed in the under-cut portions of the sockets.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN O. GORDON.
