WILLIAM C. ZIFA'LEB, 0F ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOB T0 STECKER LITHO- GRAPHIC COMPANY, 0F ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION 0F NEW YORK.
FQLDING OX.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known thatNI, WILLIAM C. Zmonnn, of the city of Rochester, county of Monroe, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fold ing-Boxes; and l do hereby declare the fol' lowing to bea full, clear, and exact description'of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of folding boxes with more particular reference to the type of box in which the body and cover are each folded from a single blank and held in such folded relation by means of coperating parts on different portions of the blank.'
The invention has for its further purpose to provide a construction which can be readily and quickly folded, and acts to retain the walls of the box securely in their proper assembled relation.
The invention is in the nature of an improvement on the construction disclosed in the patent of Goodnow, No. 695,205, granted March 11, 1902 and is intended to alford a more practicable and eliicient arrangement for accomplishing the purposes of the pat-I ented structure.
To these and other ends the invention resides in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as Will be'hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claim at the end of the specilication.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan View lof a blank constructed according to my in' vention; Fig. 2 is a plan view with the side extensions on the side walls folded; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the body portion and cover of a box constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig-lis a detail sectional view showing an end wall.
in folded relation to the side walls, and the extension on the end Wall about to be finally positioned; Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view showing the end extensions on the side walls, and the end wall, in foided relation, the extension on the end wall being in vertical position, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a corner of the box with the parts entirely folded.
Similar reference numerals throughout the several views' indicate the same parts.
Specio'ation of Letters Ratent. Patented June 299 15115. application med february t, 1915. Seria-l No. 6,354.
lt will be understood that in the 'Gonstruction of a box of thischaracter, the body p orton and cover are both formed from similar blanks, the only difference being that one '1s shghtly larger than the other in order to enable the body portion to fit within the cover: It will be unnecessary, therefore, to describe more than one of these parts and for convenience, Iwill explain' the structure of the body portion which in the present embodiment comprises a bottom portion I hav- Ing end walls 2, and side Walls/3.
The side Walls are provided with side extensions 4 which are adapted to be folded mwardly of the side walls in the manner shown in Fig. 2 and are preferably attached to the side Walls by means of glue or in any wall, the recesses Will lie at points 1n spaced relation to the bottom of the box and preferably intermediate the top and bottom of the side walls, as shown clearly .in Figs. 4 and 6. The side walls are also provided With end extensions 6 which are folded at right angles to the side walls when the box is assembled and lie adjacent to the end Wall 2, as shown in Fig. 5.
The en d Walls 2 carry extensions 7 which are adapted to be folded inwardly thereof and over the end extensions 6 of the side walls in order to retain the latter in proper position as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The extensions 7 carry locking tongues or extensions 8 which are curved to conform to the shape of the recesses 5 and are arranged intermediate the edges of the extensions 7. By this arrangement, when the extensions 7 are folded inwardly to their assembled positions shown in Fig; 6, the locking tongues 8 lie at points in spaced relation to the bottom of the box and preferably intermediate the top and bottom of the side walls, corresponding to the position of the recesses 5 on the side walls.
In assembling lthe parts, starting with a blank folded as shown in Fig. 2, the side walls are first bent upwardly, the end extensions 6 being turned inwardly to the position shown in Fig. 5. The end walls 2.are then bent upwardly as shown in Fig. 5 and the extensions 7 in turn bent downwardly over' the end extension e onine side 'wens in the manner shown *in Fig. 4runiti1 the tongues 8 spring into locking position the i xrdecesses.` The structure is eas yto assem' ble owing to the fact that the 10c g tongues.
and coperatin recess are arranged .above the bottom of t e box rather than 1n Juxtaposition to the bottom, as this makes it Aeasier to reach the locking tongues and to bring the end walls and their extensions into final position. Furthermore, by making the locking tongues and recessesl of curved formation and arranging them near the tops of the side walls, they have a closer Iengagement with each other and serve to hold the endwall extensions in tighter engagement with the end extensions on the side walls, alll of which results in a more rigid, and consequently more eficient structure.
I claim as" inyinrentiont A Al folding box comprising in combination a bottom.` portion andslide wallshaving end extensions, an -end wall having an'w extension `foldrable over the end extensions on the side walls and provided with locking tongues
