Specification of Letters Patent.

Be :it known that I,.J0HN L. Jones, of the city of Toronto, in then-Province of Ontario, Canada, asubject of, the King of Great, Britain, have made certain new and useful Improvements in.Paper Boxes; of which the following is a specification.-
This invention? relates to paper boxes .of the type in .which ends and sides are turned up andthe cornerpieces connecting them folded and-laid against the ends, and interlocked withinfolded flaps or tongues on the ends, and my object is to devise means for looking the-ends to the corner pieces which willlenable me to. reduce the depth of the end flaps: to-a minimum and thuseffect a considerable saving in stock over the locks now commonly employed which demand end-flaps or tongues of considerable depth. (For example the Birley box patented in the U. 8. Mar. 19th. 1 95, No. 536,064.)
I. attain my object by. means of the constructions hereinafter specifically described and'illu'strated in the accompanying drawwhichthe box is formed; Fig. 2 a plan view showing the boxpartly set up; and Fig. 3 a perspective detail of one corner of the. box as setup.

-The blank shown in Fig. 1 comprises an integral sheet of suitablematerial suitably cut out and scored to form the following connected -parts,- the bottom 1, the walls 2, the corner pieces 3 connecting the walls, a pair'of locking tongues 4'on opposite end walls, a pair of locking tongues 5 adjacent the tongues 4, and the end flaps 6 cut with their ends extending over the locking tongues 5.
Score lines 7 are formed between the bottom and the walls. Extensions of these score lines form the score lines 8 between the walls and corner pieces. Diagonal score lines 9 are formed extending from the inner to the outer corners of the corner pieces 3. The inner edges of the locking tongues 4 are substantially perpendicular to the edges of the walls.
As a simple out forms the division between the tongues 4 and 5 the outer edges of the. t0ngues5 are. necessarily also substantially perpendicular to the edges of the walls.
The locking tongues 5 are separated from the .flaps 6 by thecuts 10.. The parts of.
these cuts. 10 adjacent .the walls Q-are so positionedthat .when .the parts. of the box are folded asshown in- Fig. 2 thediagonal edges of the tongues 5. 1nay, by the infolding of the locking tongues, bebrought into substantialcoincident with the diagonal score lines 9.
Before'theouter sides of the flaps 6 are reached thecnts 10 are preferably laterally directed. to intersect the lines of division between the tongues 4 and 5. The flaps 6 arethus given arough T shape.
The blanks may be shipped in the form shown in Fig. 1 but. I deemit preferable to partly. set themlup as shown in. Fig. 2 before they are shipped.
It will be noted that thefiaps 6v are folded inward and that the side walls are folded in .so that the corner pieces overlie the ends of the flaps 6. The locking tongues 5' are folded over the cornerpieces and are preferably securedgthereto by staples or pal per fasteners as indicated.
VVhenthe box is to be'set'up the end walls areturned up at right angles to the bottom, the corner pieces folding along the diagonal score lines .'9 as indicated in Fig. 3. The locking tongues4 are-then turned. down in- -wardly. and engaged-with slots 11 formedin the corner pieces in suitable osition as shown. The box will now be ound to be perfectly locked so as to retainitsshape during-use. In a wide box it may be preferable tocut a tongue 12 in each end wall for engagement by the flaps 6 as shown.
The tongues 4 having their inner or locking edges substantially perpendicular to the edges of the end walls effectively resist any side pull caused by outward pressure on the side walls of the box. The tongues 5 hold the points of the folded corner pieces closely against the end walls while the folded in flaps 6 stiffen the ends and give a finished rounded edge to the middle portions of the end walls.
The locking tongues 5 and the flaps 6 are not essential to the locking if the corner pieces be stapled to end walls as shown in Fig. 2, but they are preferably emof material results in marked economy in the cost of manufacture.
What 1 claim as my invention is:
l. A paper box formed from an integral sheet of material consisting of a bottom, four walls, corner pieces folded diagonally and turned in against opposite walls; a pair of locking tongues on each OI said opposed walls having their inner sides substantially perpendicular to the bottom, the inner sides of the corner pieces being provided with slots to receive the tongues; a pair of loclt ing tongues on each of said opposed walls between the aforesaid tongues fitting within the folded corner pieces and substantially contacting with the angle of the fold.
2. A paper box formed from an integral sheet of material consisting of a bottom, four walls, corner pieces folded diagonally and turned in against opposite walls; a pair of'loclcing tongues on each of said opposed walls having their inner sides substantially perpendicular to the bottom, the inner sides of the corner pieces being provided with slots to receive the tongues; a pair of locking tongues on each of said opposed walls between the aforesaid tongues fitting within the folded corner pieces and substantially contacting with thcvangle of the fold; and fastening means securing the last mentioned tongues, the corner pieces and Walls together.
3. A paper box formed from an integral sheet of material consisting of a bottom, four walls, corner pieces folded diagonally and turned in against opposite walls; a pair of locking tongues on each of said opposed walls having their inner sides substantially perpendicular to the bottom, the inner sides of the corner pieces being provided with sletsto receive the tongues; a pair of locking tongues on each of said' opposed'walls between the aforesaid tongues fitting within the folded corner pieces and substantially contacting with the angle of the fold; and flaps on said walls turned in and having their ends. shaped to tuck under the corner pieces. v I i v '-fl.-.-;,A aper box formed from an integral sheet 0 material consisting of a bottom,
