BED ATTACHMENT.

To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK H. CRANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in bed attachments, and more particularly to those so constructed for ready and convenient attachment to the post of the bed and capable of adjustment to and from the bed proper and at a suitable distance along the length of the bed post.

The object of the invention therefore consists of a very simple, practical and etiicient device of the character above described whereby the same is adapted to be folded along its length and is so arranged as to slidingly support a suitable platform along its length and beyond the hinged and movable connections of the device.

The invention further consists in the particular construction of the clamp employed in connection with the bed post and the means forming a part thereof for hingedly securing the supporting arm to said clamp, whereby the attachment thus constructed is susceptible of various adjustments independently of the fixed clamp.

With these and other objects in View the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims, but it will be understood that changes in the specific structure, may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the ordinary post of a bed of the usual metallic construction and to which the invention is conveniently and practically attached.

The adjustable clamp 2 which is employed in carrying out the invention, is especially designed for the purpose and constructed of three sections, a, b, and 0, hingedly connected as shown at 3, and 24, the uniting ends of the sections a and 6, being provided with outwardly projecting and perforated lugs 4 through which a binding screw 5 is screwed for holding the clamp in a rigid and proper adjustment along the length of the bed post. The inner contacting surfaces of the sections of said clamp are lined with suitable yielding or textile material 6 to prevent the clamp scarring or otherwise injuring the finished appearance of the bed post, said lining 6 also serving to frictionally hold the clamp in its adjusted position.

Projecting from the hinged portion 3 of the clamp 2, is an upwardly projecting pintlc T. This pintle is formed of two sections each of which forms a part respectively, of the sections a and c, and is preferably formed of two semicircular vertical sections, and the horizontal sections 7 said pintle being so constructed and arranged as to be freely received by the looped end S, of the socket 9, whereby a hinged connection is formed between the socket member 9 and the clamp 2 for horizontal movement of the device, the binding screw 5 carried by the said clamp slightly separating the sections of the pintle 7 within the looped end 8 of the socket 9, when the parts are properly assembled, to provide a binding contact therebctween.

Projecting from the socket 9, of the attachment is a supporting bar 10, which is rectangular in cross-section and jointed or hinged in such a manner as to allow the free end of said bar to be elevated independently of its connecting portion to the socket 9, the said connecting portion 11 being properly forked at its outer end as shown by 12, to form a hinged connection for the meeting end of the bar 10. Projecting beyond the hingedly connecting end of the arm 10, is an extension 13 which comes in contact and bears against a correspondingly shaped shoulder formed in the lower edge of the short section 11 received by the socket 9, whereby said arm 10 is capable of being elevated independently of its connecting parts but held in a horizontal position in respect thereto when the device is in its normal position for practical usage in connection with the bed post to which the same is attached.

The short section 11 removably. received by the socket 9 is provided with an annular groove 15 which is positioned at a suitable distance from the free end of the same, and passing through the socket is a screw 16, the end of which is freely received by said annular groove 15 of the short section 11 allowing the latter to "be turned within the socket without removal therefrom, When oc' casion requires for adjusting the platform 17 to a proper and desirable angle in respect to the bed post.

In order to hold the supporting arm 10 in its proper position in respect to the socket 9 and connecting parts forming a continuation thereof, a binding screw 18 is employed, which is also carried by the socket having its end adapted for engagement with a suitable opening 19 formed in the short member 11 of the supporting arm and in rear of the annular groove 15 formed in said member, the cooperation of said parts preventing the said supporting bar from turning independently of the socket to which it is adjustably' secured.

As before stated, the supporting bar 10 is rectangular in cross-section and is received by a correspondingly shaped looped extension 20, which is rigidly secured to the platform 17 adjacent to its rear end and projects downwardly therefrom, said looped portion having flanged extensions 21 projecting therefrom, and providing means for securing the same to the under surface of said platform.

Projecting through the outer free end of the supporting arm 10 is a pin 22, which is adapted for cooperation with one edge of the flanged portion 21 of the loop 20, whereby the platform 17 is limited in its outward movement upon said supporting bars, the movement of said platform being limited in the opposite direction by a lug 23 projecting from the lower face of the bar against which the loop 20 comes in contact.

In practice the pin 22 carried by the arm 10, should. project a suitable distance above the upper face of said arm in order to support the platform in parallel relation to the arm and thus compensate for the thickness of'the flanged portion 21 of the loop 20, whereby a practical and sliding connection is obtained between the platform and the supporting arm thus arranged.

From the foregoing description, it will be evident that the attachment, after having been properly adjusted in its position in respect to the length of the bed post, can be moved to and from the bed proper as occasion may require, to bring the platform in a desirable position in respect to the pa tient or person in the bed, for services or other treatment, and further that said platform may be adjusted readily and conveniently in respect to the length of the attachment along the supporting bar 10. It is further to be noted that when the attachment is not in use, the same can be moved upwardly together with the platform and in close proximity to the bed post to which the same is secured, whereby the said attachment.

will readily be seen that, the supporting bar 10 may be given a sufl'icient amount of friction at its hinged connection to the clamp, in order to hold the bar in its properadjusted position in respect to the bed.

I do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of the parts as the same may be varied in many respects without departing from the nature" of the invention.

What is claimed is:

1. An attachment for beds comprising a clamp for engagement with the post of the bed formed of three sections, two of the sections being hinged to the third section, a sectional pintle, one portion of the pintle being formed integrally with the said third section, and the other portion of the pintle being formed integrally with the adjacent clamp section, and being disposed on opposite sides of one of the hinged connections, said pintle sections having their abutting faces flattened and a supporting arm having an eye in one end to receive the pintle sections, whereby when said clamp sections are secured to the post the pintle sections will be separated to frictionally wedge in the eye.

2. A bed attachment comprising a clamp for attachment to the post of the bed, said clamp having hinged sections, pintle sections on the hinged sections, an eye member for engagement on the pintle sections, said eye member having a longitudinal socket therein, a stem in the socket, a tray supporting arm hinged to the stem, a stop lug on the arm, a shoulder on the stem for engagement by the log, a yoke slidably mounted on the said arm, a tray on the yoke, a vertical lug on the free end of the arm, whereby the 10 tray is supported and the yoke limited in its outward movement.
