JAMES A. PERRY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ATTACHMENT FOR coucrms' No. 899,431. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 22, 1908.
Application filed December 14, 1907. Serial No. 406,425.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs A. PERRY, citi-' zen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State ofIllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Couches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an attachment for couches, and the objects thereof are, first, to provide a collapsible attachment adapted for removable engagement with. one end of a couch or bed; and, second, the provision of a comparatively inexpensive head or foot piece detachably connected to a couch or bed.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the novel features and in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described,
illustrated in the drawings and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto ap ended. n describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of one end of a sanitary couch with my attachment removably secured thereto. plan view showing the four members partly advanced to collapsed position. Fig. 3 is a detail view ofa hinge with one portion removed. Fig. 4 is a transverse section through one of the hinges. Fig. 5 is a top plan of a modified form of attachment.
One embodiment of my invention is described. as follows: For the purpose of providing a detachable head or foot, or both,
of a couch or bed, and the further purpose of afiording an attachment which Wlll occupy small space when not in use on the couch or bed, I employ a structure composed preferably of four members, center members 1 1 and 12 and two side members 13, each of somewhat artistic outline, the four members hinged or otherwise secured together in a manner to be collapsible when not in position on the couch. The numeral 7 denotes the angle iron frame at one end of a couch, and 8 the side leaves, held in open position by brace 9. The hinges 14 may be of any suit- Fig. 2 is a top able or desired construction that will permit a hinged or swinging movement of one memberrelatively to the adjacent member. I have shown a hinge composed of two parts, which partly embrace the adjacent portions of two members, and which are provided With internal grooves 18 to receive the annular rings or-beads 17 fixed to the members which carry them, and are secured together by screws. As shown by dotted line on the angle iron 7, the lower ends of the center members 11 and 12,and on the outer lower end of the members 13, is provided a spring clasp 15. The members 11, 12 and 13 consist preferably of a length of steel wire formed in a suitable design with theends of members 11 and 12, and the outer lower ends of 13 bent to form U-shaped spring clasps for engagement with the angle iron as shown in Fig. 1. For the purpose'of engaging and holding the side members 13 in folded position I provide what is termed spring slips 16.
For the purpose of uniting the collapsible feature of my improvement with a rigid center or the end piece composed of members 11 and 12, I have shown a modified form in Fig. 5. The modification consists in making the center one of the three hinges 14 sufficiently tight to prevent movement of member 11 or 12 in the hinge. The lower outer ends of members 11 and 12 are bent laterally to avoid the position of helical. springs 10.
In 0 eration, to remove the attachment from t e-couch shown in Fig. 1, the spring clasps are disengaged from the angle iron, the members 13 swing to fold upon the center members 11 and 12 and then the latter members folded o positely upon each other, and the colla se attachment set aside or laid away. en desired for use again the manner of its application to the couch is apparent. I
I do not limit my invention to the exact construction shown in the foregoing illustration and description of the referred form in which it has been embodied Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a couch, an attachment comprising center members secured together and lateral members hinged to the center members, and means for detachable engagement With the body of the couch.
2. In a couch, an attachment comprising center members hinged together, a lateral member hinged to each center member, each member having one or more spring clasps for removable engagement with one end of a Witnesses v S. ELRA IiELLOGG NATHAN L. BLAOKMAN.
