SAFETY-OLASP FOR JEWELRY.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 6, 1911. Serial No. 637,086.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX A. GERSON, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Jersey City, Hudson county, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Clasps for Jewelry, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to safety catches for bar-pins, breast-pins, brooches and the like, the principal object being to provide a safety catch which will not only cover or protect the end of the pins which are usually applied to the above named articles, but also to provide a device that will automatically lock and preventthe premature removal of the end of the pin from the catch therefor.
I will now proceed to describe my invention in detail, the novel features of which I will finally point out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, wherein:
Figure 1 illustrates in side elevation my improved device as applied to a bar-pin; Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view thereof, the section being taken on a line 2-2 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of the catch member of my improved device; Fig. 41 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the latch member of my improved device; Fig. 5 is an enlarged plan view of another form of latch; and Fig. 6 is an end view thereof, looking from the left in Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawing, particularly to Fig. 1, my improved device is designated, as an entirety, by the numeral 1, and is adapted to securely hold the end of a pin 2, which in this instance is pivotally secured, as at 3, to a bar or other ornamental backing 1. One element of my improved device, as herein illustrated, comprises a latching device 5, which is pivotally secured as at G, to a post 7, which in turn is carried by a plate 8, the said plate being soldered, or otherwise secured to the bar 41. The other member of my improved device comprises a catch or clamp 9 consisting of a plurality of resilient tongues 10, the outer ends of which are vertically disposed and terminate in circular heads 11. To cooperate with the tongues 10 to hold the end of the pin 2 therebetween, I provide the latch member 5 with conveXed lips 12, which are adapted to engage the circular heads 11 on the tongues 10, as shown in Fig. 2.
As herein illustrated, the pin 2 is held by the tongues 10, the said tongues being prevented from spreading by convexed lips 12. To disengage the pin from the catch or tongues 11, it is but necessary to swing the latch 5 upwardly and out of engagement with the heads 11, at which time the said pin may be pulled upwardly, thereby causing the tongues 10 to spread sufficiently to permit of the passage of the end of the pin between the adjacent surfaces of the heads 11. v
To cause the pin to engage the catching device, it is but necessary to press it clownwardly until it has passed between and assumed the position below the heads 11 of the tongues 10 shown in Fig. 2. After the pin has been forced to the above-named position, the latch 5 may be swung downwardly to the position shownin Fig. 2. It may here be stated that the lips 12 are preferably slightly resilient, in order that they will spring over the convexed portion of the heads 11 of the tongues 10. Should the pin be forced upwardly inadvertently, the action would be to tend to spread the tongues 10, but owing to the interlocking of the heads of the tongues and the lips 12 of the latch 5, the spfeading of the tongues is prevented. Therefore the pin 2 could not be forced away from its position between the tongues 10.
Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate a modified form of latch which is indicated by 1 1, the said latch 14 being provided with a lip 15 for the purpose of pivotally connecting the same to a suitable support, and conveXed lips 16. The latch 14: is provided with a slot 18 which is out in the body portion thereof and also in a depending flange 17, which is carried by the said latch at the front end thereof, the flange 17 having recesses 18 to receive the pin. The provision of the slot 18 renders the latch when embodied in this form resilient throughout the greater portion of its length. The flange 17 is provided for the purpose of providing supports for the pin 2, as the said flange will straddle the pin when the latch is forced home upon the catch members.
As can be seen in Fig. 4: the latch 5 is provided with a lip 13 which adapts the said latch for pivotal securement to the post 7.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patout is 1. A safety catch for bar pins or the like, consisting of a catch member, comprising a plurality of Vertically disposed resilient tongues adapted to receive and hold a pin therebetween, said tongues being enlarged and rounded at their free ends, a pivoted latch, the free end of which is adapted to rest upon the enlarged ends of said tongues, and con'vexed lips carried by said latch adapted to engage the enlarged rounded ends of said tongues, at the sides thereof.
2. A safety catch for bar pins or the like, consisting of a catch member, comprising a plurality of resilient tongues adapted to receive and hold apin, said tongues being rounded at their free end, a latch, a downwardly extending flange carried by said latch at one end thereof and convexed lips also carried by said latch, said latch being provided with a slot in the body portion thereof, said slot bifurcating said flange the convexed lips of said latch being adapted to engage the rounded ends of said tongues Signed at New York city, N.
