citizen of the United States, residing at of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Eyes for Hames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom anying drawings, and to characters of re erence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates, enerally, to improvements in draft-eyes or the hames of harness; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel form of jug-draft eye for hames, comprising two main elements, one of which is in the form of a bearing-member, suitably mounted upon the heme-iron, and the other element being in the form of an eye or loop, pivotally connected with the said bearing-member.

The present invention has for its principal object to provide a draft'eye for a hames of the character hereinabove mentioned, with a. view of providing a means of pivotal connection between the said bearing-member and the eye or loop of the device, that the degree of the i-votal movement of the eye or loop towar the harness-collar, when the heroes and the draft-eye are in position upon. ed and arrested, so that the draft-eye will not be brought into contact-with the face of the collar and that'any objectionable chafing is clearly overcome.

The invention has for its further object to provide a draft-eye for the hames of harness of the eneral character hereinaftenset :lorth, and in which the means of pivotal connection between the bearing-member and the eye or loop of the device is located closely to the draft-iron, the parts being provided with means for limiting the pivotal movement of the eye or loop in the direction toward the collar, so that thereby a pivay e used and which is much shorter than the forms of pivoted draft-eyes now in use.

Other objectsof this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.

' Referrin now to the said drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates a jug-drafteye illustrating one embodiment of the principles of the present invention, the said draft-eye comprising a bearing-member with which is pivotally connected, in the manner to be presently more fully described, an eye or loop-shaped member. The said bearingmemberconsists, essentially, of a suitably shaped body-portion 3 which is mounted upon and is suitably secured to the harneiron 2, in the usual manner. Extending from the said body-portion 3 are a pair of erforated ears or lugs, as l and 5, the peroration of the upper ear or lug 4 being of such conformatlon, so as to receive therein the slotted head 7 of-a pivot-pin or screwbolt 6, and the perforation in the lower ear orlu'g 5 being made screw-threaded for the reception of the screw-threaded end-portion 8 of the said bolt 6.

As shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the main part of the outer surface of the bodyportion 3 is made convex, as at 9, but a part of the said surface located between the said ears or lugs at and 5 is made fiat, as at 10. The eye or loop-shaped member herein-beforementioned' consists of a suitably formed ringshaped body 11 which is formed with a suitably shaped tubular member or element 12. The surface-conformation of this tubular member or element 12 is preferably that represented in said Fig. 3 of the drawings, being made with the eccentrica'lly disposed and singularly-shaped enlargement 13, one portion of which is flat, as at 14., and is adapted to be brought into arresting engagement with the fiat'surface-portion- 10 herein-above mentioned, when the eye or loop-shaped. member is adapted to be retated upon the shank of the screw-bolt 6, arranged within said tubular member or element 12, in a direction indicated by the arrow as in said Fig. 3, toward the body of the horse-collar, sons to limit such rotary movement of the said parts, and thereby prevent chafing of the covering of the horse collar, or of the body of the horse. itself, as will be clearly evident. Referring now to Fig. l of the drawings, in which is shown a slight modification of the device represented in said. Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, it will be seen that the portion of the main body of the bearingmember which is located between the perforated ears or lugs 1 and 5 is made with an extension or projection, as 15, and that the :tubular member or element 12 of the ring shaped body 11 is mad with a projection, as 16, forming an oft-set 17 which is adapted to be brought into arresting engagement with the said exiltcnsion or projection, 15, so as to limit the rotarymovement ofthe said ring-shaped"body 11 toward thev harnesscollar, and to prevent chafing, as will be clearly understood. I am aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several parts comprising the herein described draft-eye for the hames of a harness-collar, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, Without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the Clauses ot the claims which are appended to the said specification. 2. A draft-eye for the hames of a harness-collar, ,b01nprising a bearing-member consisting of a main body-portion; and a pair of perforated lugs or cars extending therefrom, the bodyportion of said bearingmember having its outer surface made convex and formed with a fiat part between said lugs or cars, an eye or loop-shaped body, a tubular member extending from said eye or loop-shaped body, a pivot-pin mounted in said perforated lugs or ears and the tubular member of said eye or loop-shaped body, and the tubular member of said eye or loopshaped body being provided with an eccen trically disposed and angularlyshaped enlargement adapted to be brought into arresting engagement with the flat part of the body-portion of said bearing-member to limit the rotary movement of said eye or loo-shaped member.
