Be it known that I, JAMES CANDLISH, a citizen of the United States,residing at Rawlings,

in the county of Carbon and State of WVyoming,have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Bridle and Halter Snap- Hook,0f which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a combined bridle and halter snap-hook.

The invention aims to construct a snaphook for connecting together the cheek, nose, and chin straps of a halter, as well as connecting the bit-ring to the said straps when used with a bridle.

The invention further aims to constructa snap-hook which shall be simple'in its construction, strong, durable, and efficient in its use, and comparatively inexpensive tomanufacture; and to this end it consists of the novel combination and arrangementof parts here-- inafter more specifically described ,illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved snap used in connection. with a bridle. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the snap, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the snap.

Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, 1 denotes the headstall; 2, the throatstrap; 3, the cheek-strap; 4, the nose-strap; 5, the chin-strap, and 6 the bitring. The foregoing are not parts of my invention, and are illustrated and referred to merely to show the adaptation of my improved snap therewith.

My improved snap consists of a flat baseplate 7, having a series of slots 8, 9, and 10. The slots 8 10 are substantial] y rectangular in contour and are arranged one near each side edge of the plate and parallel with one another. These slots 8 10 are adapted to receive the nose and chin straps of the bridle or halter.

-The slot 9 is arranged centrally of the plate 7, between the slots 8 10, and extends the inafter described. Formed integral with one end of the plate 7 is a flat neck portion 11 of less width than the plate 7, and which has formed integral therewith a flat substantially oval-shaped link 12, which is adapted to receive the cheek-strap 3. The other end of the plate 1 has formed integral therewith a curved hook 13, which is bent upon itself in such a manner that the free end of the hook extends above one end of the plate 1. The inner face of the free-end of the-hook 13 is cut away, so as to form a seat 14 and shoulder 15, the function of which will be hereinafter described.

The neck portion 11 is provided with an upwardly-extending apertured lug 16 and at each side of said lug with a groove 17.

The reference-numeral 18 denotes thelatch, consisting of a flat bar of suitable material and which is bifurcated at one end, as at 19,

and further provided at the said bifurcated end-with an integral pair of depending apertured cars 20, adapted to be arranged one at each side, as well as being pivotally connected tothe lug 17 by means of the pin 21. The grooves 17 permit of the operation of the ears 20 so they will not engage the upper face of the plate 7 and have their movement arrested. The latch 18 at its opposite end has formed integral with the inner face thereof a depending curved stop-arm 22, which operates through the slot 9. This end of the latch is brought to a substantially taper point and is adapted to engage the seat 14 and. shoulder 15, the shoulder 15 arresting any forward movement of the latch. The hook is adapted to receive the bit-ring 6, which is retained thereon by the latch, and the stop 22 arrests I the upward movement of the ring 6, as well as arresting or retaining the same within the hook. For keeping the tapered endof the latch in engagement with the seat 14 and shoulder 15 a flat curved spring 23 is employed, the upper end of which is secured to the inner face of thelatch 18, and the lower end thereof plays upon the neck 11.

The snap is connected up in the following manner: The bit-ring 6 is attached to .the

hook the latch retaining it in position, the

nose and chin straps secured to the slots 8 l and 10, respectively, and the cheek-strap connected to the oval link 12. Then used for a halter, the hook 13 is not employed. When it is desired to release the bit-ring, the latch 18 is pressed downwardly, and the ring 6 can be readily removed.

It is thought the many advantages of my improved snap can be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and it will also be noted that minor changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.

Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a snap, a fiat base-plate provided with a series of parallel rectangular slots, a neck portion formed integral therewith, a link formed integral with said neck portion, a hook formed integral with one end of said plate and having the inner face of its free end formed with a seat and a shoulder, a lug formed integral with said neck portion, a latch having a bifurcated end surrounding said lug, means for pivotally connecting said bifurcated end to the said stud, said latch adapted to have its free end engage said seat and shoulder, a downwardly-extending curved stop-arm operating through the center one of said slots and formed integral with the free end of said latch, and a spring secured to the lower face of said latch for keeping the free end normallyin engagement with said seat and shoulder of said hook.

9. In a combined bridle and halter snap, a

base-plate provided with a rectangular slot at each side thereof, extending parallel to one another, said plate further provided with a rectangular slot between the said side slots and which extends at one end past the ends of said side slots, a hook formed integral with one end of said plate and bent upon itself so that its free end will extend above the end of the plate, said free end of the hook having its inner face formed with a seat and shoulder, a neck port-ion formed integral with the opposite end of said plate and provided with a pair of grooves, a link formed integral with the said neck portion, a latch adapted to be normally in engagement with said seat and shoulder of the hook, a stop-arm formed integral with one end of said latch and operating within the central slot of the plate, apair of apertured ears formed integral with the opposite end of said latch and adapted to operate partly within the grooves of the neck portion, an apertured lug connected with said neck portion and extending upwardly between the said ears and through the end of the latch, means for pivotally connecting the said ears to the said lug, and a spring secured to the inner face of said latch and engaging the said neck portion for retaining the free end of the latch in engagementwith the said seat and shoulder.
