UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES R. HARRIS, OF WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
BUCKLE.
SIPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,628, dated November 8, 1892.
' Application filed September 1, 1890- Serial No. 363,711. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES R. HARRIS, a resident of Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to .be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in buckles, and more particularly to suspenderbuckles, its object being to so construct the buckle that a snap or spring hook will be formed at the lower side thereof.
A further object is to produce a wire buckle which shall be simple in construction and effective in the performance of its functions.
With these objects in view the invention consists in a wire buckle comprising a frame and a wire front mounted on said frame and extended to produce the tongue of a snaphook.
It further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved buckle. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
A represents the frame of the buckle, made of wire. The wire composing said frame is bent at its center, first downwardly and then upwardly, to produce a hook B, the free ends of the wire being bent to produce projections a, which form in part the upper side of the frame. l
The cross-bar C of the buckle, which extends from end to end of the frame, is pro-.
vided at one edge with teeth a and at its ends with ears or loops 1), adapted to loosely embrace the end bars c'of the frame, whereby said cross-bar may have a sliding movement on the end bars 0. Connecting the projections 0 is a loosely-mounted sleeve D, which closes the upper side of the frame. The sleeve D is provided centrally with a perforation for the reception of the arms d of the front E of the buckle, which arms extend into said sleeve and lie in line with the projections a of the frame. The sleeve D is also provided with an ear 6, adapted to embrace the wire composing the front of the buckle, and thus connect the sleeve and front of the buckle together. By this means the front E is hinged to the frame andadapted to swing. The wire composing the front E is bent latorally in both directions to produce a clamping-barf, and at its lower end is made in the form of a loop g, adapted to enter the hook B and close the same when the device is in use, whereby the loop h, attached to the strap 2', will be prevented from escape.
When it is desired to adjust the buckle, it is simply necessary to slide the cross-bar 0 toward the bottom edge of the buckle and move the buckle on the strap 2' to the proper position, after which said cross-bar will be moved upwardly in proximity to the top of the frame. By this means the strap t' will be clamped between the cross-bar C and the clamping-bar f and the loop g forced into contact with thehook and adapted to hear thereon with a yielding pressure.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, ancbdesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Inabuckle, thecombinatiomwithaframe having a hook at its lower end and a sliding cross-bar mounted on said frame, of a front or presser bar connected to the top of the frame, the lower end of said front engaging the hook and held in position thereby, substantially as set forth.
2. Ina wire buckle, the combination, with wire frame having a hook at its lower end and a toothed cross-bar slidingly mounted on the sides of said frame, of a front or presser bar connected to the top of the frame and engaging and held in position by the hook at the lower end of said frame, the lower or depending portion of the front or presser bar forming a snap for the hook, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES R. HARRIS.
