PIPE ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 31, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. LANG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portersville, in the county of Tulare and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the ac companying drawing.
This invention relates to tobacco pipes and has for its object to prevent saliva from passing into a pipe.
The invention further has for its object to provide means for preventing saliva from entering a tobacco pipe, and adapted to be conveniently located within the mouth of a smoker.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view of a tobacco pipe with the stem in longitudinal section and a device mounted on said stem constructed in accordance with this invention, for preventing saliva from entering the pipe. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view in longitudinal section.
of the device constructed in accordance with this invention for preventing saliva from entering the pipe. Fig. 3 is an end view of the pipe. Fig. 4 is a detail view in longitudinal section of a portion of a pipe stem and a modified form of the device for preventing saliva from entering the pipe.
In the accompanying drawing 1 indicates a tobacco pipe having mounted in the stem 2 thereof the device constructed in accordance with this invention for preventing saliva from entering the pipe and consisting of a tube-formed with a longitudinal straight threaded portion 3 adapted to be screwed into the stem 2 and with the upwardly inclined portion 4: terminating in a curve 5 from which extends a depending straight portion 6. a
The device just described is of such a size as to take up little room when located in the mouth of a smoker and in order that it may be firmly grasped by the mouth of the smoker it is preferably formed on the back of the vertical portion 6 adjacent to the top thereof with an oval projection 7 and at the lowerend of the straight portion 6 with a lateral projection 8 whereby when the device is located in the mouth of a smoker the oval projection 7 will bear against the upper teeth of the smoker and the lateral projection 8 will bear against the back of the lower teeth of the smoker. By means of this device saliva will not pass up into the same and it will be thereby prevented from entering into the pipe. In lieu of having the end 3 of the device threaded it may be smooth, as shown in Fig. 2.
In Fig. i is shown a modification of the device in which the projections 7 and 8 are dispensed with, said modification consisting of a small tube having a straight longitudinal portion 9, an inclined portion 10 extending therefrom, a curved portion 11, and a downwardly extending vertical portion 12. The stem 2 of the pipe being held between the teeth a short tube bent as described takes up little room within the mouth of the smoker and prevents the saliva from passing into the pipe. The short tube hereinbefore described may be readily connected to and detached from the stem of a tobacco pipe and serves to prevent saliva from entering the pipe and to lessen the accumulation of damp matter within the stem and bottom of the bowl of the pipe.
What I claim is An attachment for tobacco pipes consisting of a short tube having a horizontal portion adapted to be inserted in the end of a pipe stem, an inclined portion extending upwardly from said horizontally inclined portion, a curved portion at the upper end of said inclined portion a depending portion extending downward from said curved portion and having adjacent to its upper end a projection on its rear side, and at its lower end a projection on its front side.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. LANG.
