UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL M. HARMAN, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CHAIR.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, DANIEL M. HARMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in chairs having sides which are adapted to swing to horizontal positions and form seats.
The invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chair showing the sides in solid lines in vertical positions and in dotted lines in horizontal positions. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the chair. Fig. 3 is a detail in elevation, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A, A designate the legs of the chair, B the permanent seat and C the back. Hinged to the opposite sides of the stationary seat B are the sides D similar in construction and each provided with an arm rest D. Each side is hinged at E to the opposite sides of the seat B and fastened to the outer face of each side is a bar F having a slot F near one end thereof, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. A rod Q is mounted upon each bar F and has its upper end bent at an angle as at Q, and projects through the slot F. A catch 0 is fastened upon a crosspiece 0 and is adapted to be engaged by the lower end of the rod to hold the sides in upright positions.
Hinged to the face of each side are the supporting legs P, each of which is provided with a notch P formed in the edge thereof and adapted to receive the endR of an angle lever B, which latter is pivotally mounted upon a pin R fastened to Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 624,640.
Q, will cause the levers R to tilt and the ends R to be withdrawn from contact with the upper ends of the legs F, allowing the same to swing at right angles to the sides when the latter are in horizontal position and in which positions the ends R of the 7 angle levers will engage recesses P. When the sides are in vertical positions, they are held in such positions by the lower ends of the rods Q engaging the catches 0 upon the cross-pieces O.
By the provision of a chair made in accordance with my invention, it will be noted that the same may be conveniently converted into a couch or seat for several persons as may be desired. When in either of its adjusted positions, the parts will be securely held in place.
What I claim to be new is 1. A chair having legs with cross-pieces connecting the same and a stationary seat supported by the legs, sides hinged to the opposite edges of the stationary seat, bars fastened to each side and projecting beyond the hinged end thereof, a longitudinally movable rod mounted upon each of said bars, a catch upon each cross-piece and adapted to be engaged by the rod, one end of said rod being bent at an angle, springs fastened to each side, legs hinged to each side and each provided with a notch, angle levers pivoted to each side and having corresponding ends engaging the angle portion of said rod and against which levers said springs bear, each lever adapted to engage the hinged legs.
2. A chair having legs with cross-pieces connecting the same and a stationary seat supported by the legs, sides hinged to the opposite edges of the stationary seat, bars fastened to each side and projecting beyond the hinged end thereof, a longitudinally movable rod mounted upon each of said bars, a catch upon each cross-piece and adapted to be engaged by the rod, one end With a notch in the hinged leg when the lat- 10 of said rod being bent at an angle, springs ter is in a vertical position.
fastened to each side legs hinged to each In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my side and each provided with a notch, angle signature in the presence of two Witnesses. levers pivotally mounted upon each side DANIEL EL HARMAN and havlng corresponding ends engaging the angle end of said rod, said levers en- Vitnesses:
gaged by said springs, each lever having V. HAMILTON Ross,
an L-shaped end designed for engagement EDWD. E. NICHOLAS.
