Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 17, 1910, Serial No. 577,556. Renewed March 14, 1912. Serial No. 683,706.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, MATTI PIETILAINEN, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at- Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VrenChes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a wrench that can be easily and quickly adjusted; second, to provide a wrench that can be advantageously used in connect-ion with the kits of automobiles, motor cycles,
and similar vehicles; third, to furnish a wrench with an adjusting mechanism that is posit-ive in its action and free from injury by ordinary use, and fourth, to provide a wrench that is simple in construction, durable, and eliicient for various purposes.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had tothe drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench partly broken away and partly in section. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the wrench partly broken away and partly in section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the wrench taken on the line III#III of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line IV-IV of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on the line V-V of Fig. 1.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
1 denotes a shank oval in cross section and having the upper end thereof provided with a stationary jaw 2. The shank 1 is oval in cross section and has the lower end thereof reduced to provide a stem 3, and this stem has opposite sides thereof provided with teeth 4 with the other sides thereof smooth or plain, as at 5.
Movably mounted upon the shank 1 is a sleeve 6 having the upper end thereof provided with a jaw 7 adapted to cooperate with the jaw 2 in gripping the facets of a nut or other structure. The opposite sides of the sleeve 6 are attened, as at 8, and the flattened faces cut-away at the upper end of the sleeve, as at 9, to decrease the weight of the sleeve and permitof the movable parts of the wrench being easily lubricated. l
The lower end of the sleeve 6 terminates in two oppositely disposed arms 10 having the confronting faces thereof provided with teeth 11. The lowenends of the arms 10 are connected by a collar 10a, the inner sides of said collar having a continuation of the teeth 11, but which threads are interrupted at four diametrically opposite points and thereby form four threaded port-ions therein as best shown in Fig. 5.
Inclo'sing the lower end of the sleeve 6 is a sectional tapering handle, the sections 12 of said handle being retained together by a band or ferrule 13 upon the upper ends of the sections and a cap 14 upon the lower ends thereof, these sections having inwardly projecting ribs 15 to guide the depending arms 10 of a sleeve 6. The cap 14 is provided with a central opening 16 for the stem 17 of a head 18, and fitted upon the lower end of the stem 17 is a knurled button or knob 19 to facilitate the rotation of the stem 17. Mounted upon the head 18 within the sectional handle is the lower end of a tubular adjusting member 20, said member having t-he diamet-rically opposed outer sides' thereof provided with teeth 21'to engage the teeth 11 of the arms 10, and two diametrically opposed inner sides of said member are provided with teeth 22 to engage the two oppositely disposed rows of teeth 4 of the stem 3.
To adjust the aw 7 and the sleeve 6 relatively to the jaw 2 of the shank 1, it is only necessary to rotate the knob 19, this knob through the medium of the eXteriorly threaded member 20 raising and lowering the collar 10a of the sleeve 6, for a limited initial movement either in the tightening or the releasing operation. The bringing of the interrupted threaded portions of the adjusting member adjacent those of the arms and stem allows a free longitudinal relative movement of all of the parts and when the jaws are then shifted to the desired place', a movement of the knob 19 operates the adjusting member 20 for engagement with the respective threads and thus an edectual locking of the jaws upon the work is effected.
The wrench in its entirety can be made of strong and durable metal and of various sizes.
That I claim, is:
A wrench comprising a shank, a stem carried by the inner end of said shank, and
provided with threads upon the front and rearsides thereof, a stationary jaw Carried by t-he outer end ot said shank, a sleeve slidably mounted on said shank and provided with a aw to coperate with the aw on said shank, depending arms Carried by said sleeve and provided interiorly thereoil with screw threads, a threaded collar at the lower ends of the arms, a handle formed of two sections to inelose the inner end of said shank and said arms, an adjusting member arranged intermediate the threaded stem of the shank and the depending arms carried by the sleeve, the adjusting member being externally threaded upon two opposite sides thereof adapted for engagement with t-he opposite threads of the shank stem and also being externally threaded upon four sides and adapted to engage the interrupted threads of the said arms, all of the threads of the adjusting member being Capable of disengagementwith all other threads upon a relative turning of the adjusting member with respect to the arms and stem, and means arranged eXteriorly of said handle in engagement with said adjusting member and revoluble therewith, substantially as described.
