IINVENTOR /gpagwlaon ATTORNEYS HARRISON DAVIDSON, 0F TURTLE CREEK, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 19, 1912.
Application filed March 8, 1912. Serial No. 682,352.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HARRISON DAVIDSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Turtle Creek, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches, and the primary object of my invention is to provlde a quick acting wrench wherein simple and effective means is employed for holding the adjustable jaw of the wrench relatively to the shank thereof, whereby the jaw can be quickly adjusted in either direction.
A further object of this invention is to provide a wrench of the above type consisting of comparatively few parts that are simple, durable, inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is intended.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench showing the adjustable jaw in section, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a portion of the wrench, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the adjustable jaw body, and Fig. 4 is a similar View of a detached side plate for the jaw body.
A wrench in accordance with this invention comprises a shank 1 rectangular in cross section and having the front side thereof provided with transverse teeth 2 that present shoulders 8. The outer end of the shank 1 has a fixed jaw 4 providing a flat gripping surface 5 at the front side of the shank, and the inner end of the shank has a handle 6 of a conventional form.
Slidably mounted upon the shank 1 is an adjustable jaw body 7 having a longitudinal slot 8 to provide clearance for the shank 1. The jaw body presents a flat gripping surface 9 at the front side of the shank 1 that coiiperates with the flat gripping surface 5 of the jaw 4. The jaw body 7 is provided with a recess 10 in communication with the slot 8 and pivotally mounted in the outer end of said recess by a transverse pin 11 is a pawl 12 that engages the shoulders 3 of the teeth 2. The front side of the pawl 12 has a V recess 13 for the eye of a rod 14:, the eye of said rod being retained within the recess 18 by atransverse pin 15. The rod 14 extends through a slot 16 provided therefor in the front side of the jaw body, and encircling said rod, within the recess 10, is a coiled compression spring 17 that holds the pivoted pawl 12 normally in engagement with the front side of the shank.
The front side of the jaw body 7 has a longitudinal tapering groove 18 and pivotally mounted in said groove by a transverse pin 19 is a finger piece 20 to which the protruding end of the rod 14 is pivotally connected by a small transverse pin 21. The inner end of the finger piece is curved, as at 22 whereby the thumb or finger can be easily placed under the same to shift the rod 14 and move the pivoted pawl 12 out of engagement with the shank 1, whereby the adjiiiistable jaw can be shifted toward the han- After the pawl 12, finger piece 20 and the connections thereof have been installed, a side plate 23 is mounted upon the jaw body 7, said side plate being retained in engagement therewith by a plurality of rivets 24 or other fastening means.
The shape of the teeth 2 permits of the adjustable jaw body being shifted toward the fixed jaw 4, as the pawl 12 can recede over said teeth. In consequence of this construction, the adjustable jaw body can be quickly shifted into engagement with a nut or other object, and when it is desired to release the adjustable jaw body, the finger piece 20 is moved to shift the pawl 12 out of engagement with the shank.
The wrench can be made of strong and durable metal, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A wrench comprising a toothed shank provided with a fixed jaw, an adjustable jaw body having a slot through which extends said shank, said jaw body provided with a recess having an inclined wall, said recess opening into said slot, an inclined pawl arranged in said recess and extending into said slot to engage the teeth of the shank, means for pivotally connecting the upper end of said pawl to the jaw body, said jaw body having its front edge provided with an inclined ooket and further having a slot establishing communication between the recess and the pocket, a rod having one end pivotally mounted in said pawl and its free end extending into said pocket, a coiled spring surrounding said rod and interposed between said pawl and one wall 0t said recess, a finger piece arranged in said pocket and having its forward end pivotally connected to the jaw body, and means for pivotally connecting said rod to said finger piece intermediate its ends, said finger piece having its rear end projecting outwardly from said pocket.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
