BOX-LID-ATTACHING MEANS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 36), inf-i2.
Application filed May 25, 1911. Serial No. 629,306.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS I. HEILBRUN, citizen of the United States, and residentof New York, in the county or" New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Lid .lttaching Means, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for removably attaching a lid or cover to a box or other receptacle, such for instance, as a lid or cover of glass or other transparent material to a box or other receptacle the contents of which it may be desired to display without exposure to dust, moisture or other undesirable foreign substance; the object of my invention being to provide an improved means by which a lid or cover under such circun'istances may be readily and conveniently attached to or detached from the body of a box or other receptacle. This object is attained by means of the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth in detail and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Fig ure 1 is a perspective view of a box having a lid or cover attached thereto by means embodying my invention, said attaching means comprising an adjustable frame for detachable connection with the lid and clasp attachments hinged to said frame for detach ably connecting the latter and its supported lid to the box. Figs. 2., 8 and t are perspective views of detail parts to be hereinafter referred toand described.
Similar reference characters indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
The lid attaching means embodying my invention, may as hereinbefore stated, be
adapted to removably attach a lid or cover of any desired kind to a box or receptacle of any desired kind. In the present case said means is shown in use as attaching a glass lid 2 to a box 3 from which the regular lid has been removed. This lid attaching means comprises two main elements, one, a frame for connection with the lid and, two, clasp attachments connected to said frame for of fecting a detachable hiiwed connection of the same and its supported lid with the box, The lid frame is of the take-down type\ and comprises a lurality of chambered cor-lner-members 4: a apted to fitsnugly over the corners of the lid, and a plurality of tie members 5 adapted to connect with said cornenmembers to secure theniv in their said position on the lid. These members a and 5 may be formed of any suitable material, but preferably they will be formed of sheet metal as being most serviceable.
The tiemembers for securing the cornermembcrs in position may be of any suitable form, but they will preferably be of the form illustrated, which comprises a central portion 6, Ushaped in cross-section to fitover the edges of the lid, and a pair of oppo= sitely disposed arms 7, 7, projecting from" each end of said central portion 6 for loclrng engagement with the corner-members at their opposite or upper and lower sides, re spectively; these arms each being provided with a series of openings 8 to receive locl ing clasps 9 on the corner-members and pro- -vide for the adjustment of the lid-frame to lids of different sizes. As thus constructed, the lid-frame may be readily fitted to lids of different sizes and when fitted to the lids be firmly retained in connection therewith.
The clasp attachments for effecting a. detachable connection of the lid-frame and its supported lid with the box are indicated generally at 1O, 10, and have a hinged connection, as at 11, with two of the corner members t as shown. These attachments each consist of a one-piece double clasp the two members of which, indicated at 12, 12, are of inverted U-shaped. form and arranged at an angle to each other for clamping engagement with the upper edge of a box at the corners thereoi' as shown. This construction of clasp attachment assures a firm connection of the attachment with the box, and also prevents any longitudinal movement of the lid relatively to the box, as the clasp members engaging the ends of the box serve to hold the clasp members engaging the rear wall of the box against longitudinal or endwise movement, as will be readily understood. These clasp attachments will usually be formed of sheet metal and the bond 1 1- between the clasp members of each attachment will usually be malls able, thereby permitting of the attachments being closely fitted to boxes of varying shapes and sizes.
What I claim is I 1. Box-lid attaching means comprising a lid-frame hand box-attaching means connected thereto, said frame consisting of cornor-members adapted to fit over the lid cor= 11ers and beingprovided with locking clips, and tie-members connecting said corner members and each having a series of openings to receive the locking clips of the latter for effecting detachable and adjustable connection therewith.
2. Box-lid attaching means comprising a lid-frame and box-attaching means hinged thereto, said frame consisting of corner members adapted to lit over the lid corners and being provided with looking clips, and U-shaped tie-members connecting the corner members and each having a series of openings adjacent its opposite ends to receive the locking clips of said corner members for effecting detachable and adjustable connection therewith.
Box-lid attaching means comprising lid-frame and box-attaching means hinged thereto, said frame consisting of. corner members adapted to fit over the lid corners and being provided with locking clips at opposite sides thereof, and Ushaped ticrnenibers adapted to {it over the edges of the lids and each being provided at its opposite ends with a pair of oppositely dis posed arms each having a. series of openings to receive the locking clips of said corner members for effecting detachable and adjustable connection therewith.
l. Boxdid attaching means comprising a frame consisting of corner members pro vided with locking clips, and tieinenibers connecting said corner members and each having a series of openings to receive the locking clips of the latter for effecting detachable and adjustable connection therewith.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this 20th day of May A. D. 1911.
LOUIS I. HEILBRUN.
