To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLAN STEWARD CAM- BRIDGE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, of Hereford Street Chambers, Christchurch, New Zealand, residing at 17 Hanover street, Keighley, in the county of York, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Generating or Producing Gas, of which the following description, together with the accompanying sheet of drawing, is a specification.
My invention relates to apparatus for generating or producing gas, and consists in the application of an improved grate and hearings or supports for same which will enable the removal of the refuse such as spent fuel, ashes and the like, therefrom, without permitting the ingress of air or the egress of gases.
To attain the object of my invention 1 make use of the device hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying sheet of drawing, in which the figure is a vertical sectional view of the improved gas generator or producer.
The upper part or chamber 2 within which the gas is produced although herein shown of special type or formation may be any of the usual classes of apparatus other than that herein illustrated since my improved devices are applicable to other forms as will be understood. At the lower part of this chamber 2 a chamber 6 is formed by the wall 6 surrounding a funnel shaped conductor 7. Beneath this chamber 6 a cylindrical cavity is formed by the walls 5 (to which the supports or base pieces 5 are secured) extending from said walls 6* as shown by the drawings, so that a hollow valve 8 may be mounted therein to carry a grate 11 on one portion of its surface while at about right angles thereon an opening 12 is made through the walls of this hollow valve 8. The cylindrical or base cham ber is preferably arranged on an incline and the valve 8 snugly, but rotatably, fits therein. Secured to the walls 5 is a plate 5 provided with a central laterally projecting sleeve or bearing 8 through which the spindle or shank 8 that is carried by the upper closed end of the valve 8 projects. Spindle 8 extends beyond the outer end of sleeve 8 and has a handle 9 held thereon by means of a nut, or other fastening means. The handle 9 abuts the outer end of sleeve 8* and thereby prevents the valve sliding out of the chamber 2. At the other end of the hollow valve a plate valve 10 is mounted by being pivoted at 10 and having a handle formed upon it so that it may be turned into position for covering the outer opening at the end of said valve 8 (where it is held by an additional screw or other device) or it may be removed therefrom for the purposes hereinafter described. Packing mate rial is placed in the walls and takes against the outer surface of the valve 8. The open end of valve 8 is at the lower end of the cylindrical base chamber, and the plate 10 normally seals the open end of the said valve 8. 4
The apparatus constructed as herein described enables the attendant when wishing to remove the refuse, ashes, clinkers or the like from the base of the chamber 2, to turn the opening 12 to be uppermost and so to be brought beneath said chamber 2, consequently the lose ashes, clinkers and refuse will descend through said opening 12 into the valve 8 on which the attendant may then actuate the valve 8 by the handle 9 in order to bring a blank part of said valve 8 opposite the opening in the wall of the barrel 5, thus preventing the ingress or egress of air or gas at such time. When the valve 8 has been turned into this last named posi tion the attendant may remove the plate 10 so that the contents of the valve 8 may be taken away, after which, on replacing the plate 10, he may again actuate the han dle 9 so as to move the valve 8 to bring the grate 11 beneath the receptacle 2 in this manner readjusting the apparatus to enable same to continue its ordinary functions. It is preferred to arrange the valve 8 on an incline for the reason that the ashes and the like will freely slide through the same, thus facilitating the removal of the ashes.
Such being the nature and object of my invention what I claim is 1. In a-gas making apparatus, the combination of a producer having an inclined base chamber, a hollow valve rotatable therein and provided with an inlet opening in its side and a grated surface adjacent thereto, said valve having an open discharge end, and a pivotal plate connected to the base chamber for sealing the discharge end of the valve.
2. In, combination, a gas producer having an inclined base chamber, said chamber having a. closed upper end and an open lower end, a plate normally sealing said open end, a hollow valve rotatable in said chamber and having a closed upper end and an open lower end, said valve being provided with an inlet opening, a spindle carried by the closed end of the valve and projecting through and journaled in the closed end of the base chamber, and a handle carried by the outer end of the spindle and abutting the closed end of the chamber to prevent longitudinal movement of the valve.
3. In a gas making apparatus, a producer provided with a base chamber, a hollow valve rotatable in said chamber and provided with a grate in its side and with an inlet opening adjacent the grate, said valve having a discharge outlet, and means pivotally connected to one end of said cha1nan inclined base chamber, said chamber hav ing an open lower end and a closed upper end, said closed upper end being provided with a central outwardly projecting bearing sleeve, a hollow valve rotatable in the charm ber and provided with a closed upper end, an open lower end, and a side inlet opening, a spindle carried by the upper end of the valve and projecting through and journaled in the bearing sleeve, a handle fast on said spindle and abutting the outer end of the bearing sleeve to prevent longitudinal move ment of the valve, and means for normally closing the open end of the base chamber.
