Description

(No Model.)
G. W. MOORE.
BARREL CLOSURE.
No. 463,252. Patented Nov. 17, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLARENCE W. MOORE, OF PEABODY, MASSACHUSETTS.
BARREL-CLOSURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.463,252, dated November 17, 1891.
Application filed June 6, 1891. Serial No. 395,357. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE W. .MOORE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Peabody, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and usef n1 Improvements in Barrel-Closures, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in barrel or box closure for the purpose of making an air-tight connection betweenthe cover and the box or barrel, as will hereinafter be more fully shown and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein-- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the upper end of a box or barrel provided with my improved air-tight closing device. Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal section on the line X X shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section on the line Y Y shown in Fig. 2.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they ocour on the different parts of the drawings.
A represents a cylindrical box or barrel, as usual, of which only a portion-namely, the upper end is shown in the drawings.
13 is the cover, having on its under side an annular projection 19, adapted to fit within the upper end of the barrel or box A, as shown in Fig. 2.
O is an elastic packingring, preferably made of india-rubber or similar yielding material, said ring being arranged outside of the annular projection 12 and adapted to fit against the end of the box or barrel when the cover is closed upon it, as shown in the drawlugs.
15' is a handle of any suitable or well-known form or construction, preferably secured to the cover B but this is not essential, as said handle may be dispensed with, particularly if the closing device is to be used on small boxes, the covers of which may be grasped by hand direct. a
The closing device for securing the cover to the barrel or box end is constructed as follows; To the periphery of the box or barrel are secured two or more helical or inclined ribs or projections D D, as shown. E E are hangers or downwardly-projecting ears secured to the cover B, each of such hangers having pivoted to itat e a rocker 0r bearing-block F, the upper side of which is adapted to fit against the inclines D D when the cover is closed on the box or barrel, as shown in the drawings. By having the blocks F F pivoted, as above described, they are capable of automatic adjustment relative to the inclines D D as the cover is being turned relative to the box or barrel during the closing operation.
To vefiect a close connection between the cover and box or barrel all that is necessary to do is to place the cover on the top of the box or barrel, with the elastic packing-ring C resting on the top of said box and the hangers E E, with their pivoted blocks F F, placed in front of the inclines D D, after which the cover is turned toward the right, causing the blocks F F to come in contact with the said inclines and to slide downward on the same, by which the hangers and cover are forced downward and the packing O compressed tightly between the under side of the cover and the top of the barrel or box, as shown in the drawings. To remove the cover it is only necessary to turn it in an opposite direction.
This invention is very useful for many purposes where it is desired to close a barrel or box air-tight and in such a manner that the cover may be easily removed and replaced at any time Without the aid of tools, screw-nails, or other similar means.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- 1. In a barrel or box closing device, a removable cover having secured to it hangers with blocks pivoted thereto, combined with inclines secured to the barrel or box and an elastic packing-ring interposed between the said cover and barrel or box, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a barrel or box closing device, a removable cover having hangers secured to it with blocks pivoted thereto, combined with inclines secured to the barrel or box, substantially as and for the'purpose set forth.
3. Ina barrel or box closing device, a removable cover having an annular lip on its under side adapted to fit inside of the barrel or box, an elastic packing-ring surrounding name to this specification, in the presence of said m1nularlip,l1angers secured to said cover, two subscribing Witnesses, on this 2d day of blocks pivoted to said hangers, and inclines June, A. D. 1891.
secured to the barrel or box, all combined and CLARENCE \V. MOORE. 5 arranged substantially as and for the purpose \Vitnesscs:
set forth. ALBAN ANDREN,
In testimony whereof I have signed my CHARLES \V. ENOs.
