Description

UNrrn srafwrgigsggfiprnn FIQE.
ALFRED BOX, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
MECHANICAL STOKER.
No. 852,763. Original application filed May 20, 1905, Serial No. 261,379.
To @ZZ rui/wmf t 'may concern-.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED Box, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of the city of Pliiladelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Stokers, of which the following is a specification.
rl`his invention relates to stokers, this application being an application filed by me, May rial Number 261,379.
It has for its object to provide a hopper having a compartment below the mechanical feeding mechanism that will permit the push ing of the coal down on the grate when the 'fire requires to be banked., thus preventing' the fire creeping 'up into the hopper; and that will permit a handfeeding, in case the mechanical feeding mechanism breaks down, or of kindling wood in starting the fire.
Other and further objects will appear in the following description and will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure l is a sectional view of my hopper and a portion of the furnace to which the hopper is attached. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of two hoppers arranged side by side on a furnace, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, l indicates the furnace and 2 the hoppers. Each hopper is divided into compartments 3 and 4 by a wall 5. The lower compartment 3 is closed by a cover 6 hinged at 7, and is employed for feeding by hand, for pushing the coal down the inclined grate 18 of any construction, and for a slight opening to ascertain the condition of the fire.
The upper compartment 4 is employed for the mechanical feeding and has mounted therein a rotary feed Wheel S thel shaft 9 of which is common to both hoppers.
The wall or partition 5 is pivoted intermediate of its ends by means of a shaft 10 and is held in its normal position by a weighted arm 11 secured to shaft 10, until an excess of coal passes beneath the feed wheel S, when mechanic al a division of Specification of Letters Patent.
Divided and this application filed November l1:,1905. Serial No. 285,881.
Patented May '7, 1907.
the inner end of the wall yields to prevent a breaking of the parts of the feed mechanism. The feed wheels 8 are operated from a single line shaft 12 journaled on the under sides of the yhoppers and connected to the feed wheel shaft 9 thro ugh the means of a number of eccentrics 13 each turning in one of the pitmen 14 which are connected to the free ends of the arms 1.5 jo'urnaled at their other ends on the feed wheel shafts and each carrying a spring pressed pawl 16 for engagement with one of the toothed wheels 17 keyed to the feed wheel shaft. Thus it will be seen that motion given to the line shaft will be transmitted to the feed wheels of the hopers. y Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. rlhe combination of a hopper having two compartments leading to the furnace, one of said compartments permitting hand feed, and feeding mechanism located in the other compartment.
2. The combination of a hopper having two compartments leading to the furnace, the lower one of which permits a hand feed, and feeding mechanism located in the upper compartment.
3. The combination of a hopper having two compartments leading to the furnace, the wall separating the compartments being yielding, and a feeding mechanism mounted in one of the compartments.
4. The combination of a hopper having two compartments leading to the furnace, the lower one of which permits hand feed and the upper wall separating the two compartments being yielding, and a feed wheel mounted in the upper compartment.
The foregoing specification signed at Phila delphia, Pa., this 18th day of October, 1905.
ALFRED BOX.
