MEANS FOR REVOLVING FIRE-BOX DOORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. a, rare.
Application filed October 29, 1915. Serial No. 58,691.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTOINE EMILE Vii.- ZINA, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident in Outremont, in the Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Revolving Fire-Box Doors; and I do hereby declare that the following'is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The invention relates to means for revolving fire boX doors of the kind described in applicants Canadian Patent No. 152,7 68, and dated December 23rd, 1913, and consists of a lever connected at one end to a quadrant which is in engagement with a pinion mounted on the actuating shaft of the doors, said lever being fulcrumed intermediate of its length and a foot pedal pivotally secured in the floor, disposed over the other end of said lever and means to actuate said lever so that by pressing the foot pedal downwardly, it will cause the revolving doors to be opened and by releasing said foot pedal, the doors will be brought back into their closed position by means of a spring secured to one side of the quadrant, at one end, and to the boiler plate at the other end.
The object of the invention is to provide a means to actuate the revolving doors without causing any strain on the operator also whereby a certain amount of play will be given the said foot pedal for vibration, which usually happens on locomotives and whereby the doors will be kept opened even if the operators foot did temporarily leave the pedal. The trouble with the ordinary foot pedals used for revolving fire box doors lies in the fact that vibration often causes the foot to slip ofi, or lift from the pedal and immediately the doors close. Applicants pedal is so constructed that it would avoid also these inconveniences.
The invention will be hereinafter de scribed with the aid of the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention showing a portion of the door operating shaft and pedal, the said pedal being in its non-operative position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the invention, the foot pedal being shown in its operative position. Fig. 3 is a top view of the foot pedal and Fig. 4 is an under view of the foot pedal.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the front plate of a locomotive boiler and 2 represents the floor in which is secured the rectangular frame d which is secured to the said floor by means of the'projecting ears 5 and bolts 6.
7 is a foot pedal pivotally mounted at one end on the shafts 8, which are secured in the frame 4. Theotherend of said pedal being provided with slots 9 and 10.
11 1s a shaft mounted in the sides of said pedal and journaled therein and provided with a roller 12, said roller contacting with opellfnd of the lever 13, which is fulcrumed a 15 is a rod having a forked end 16 to whlch is pivotally connected the other end of the lever 13, said rod passing through a slot in the floor 2 and being inclosed up to a certam height by a casing 17, to prevent oinders, or coal from dropping beneath the floor.
18 is a fork connection to which is threaded the rod 15 at one end and 19 is a crank arm secured on the shaft 20 at one end and pivotally secured at the other end between the forks 21 on connection 18.
22 is a quadrant rigidly mounted on the shaft 20 and 23 is a pinion engaging said quadrant.
24 is a spiral spring secured at one end to one side of the quadrant and at the other end to a hook 25 which is secured on a portion of the boiler. A number of hooks have been provided in order that if it is necessary to give more tension to the said spring 24,
it may be attached to another hook disposed under said hook 25.
26 is an arm mounted on the shaft 11 within the foot pedal casing and having at one end the notch 27, which slightly projects through the slot 9 and is adapted to engage the pawl 28 pivotally mounted on the lugs 29 when the foot pedal is pressed clownwardly, the other end of said arm 26 extending through the slot 10 and terminating in the expanded head 30.
It is readily seen that in the operation of the invention herein described, the foot pedal 7 is pressed with the foot downwardly in the position shown in Fig. 2. By pressing down said foot pedal 7 the fulcrumed lever 13 will be pressed downwardly by the roller 12 and the quadrant 22 will be actuated. Tn pressing down the foot pedal 7, the pawl 28 is adapted to engage the notch 27 in the end of the arm 26. Therefore, should the foot of the operator lift from contact with the pedal, due to vibration, therevolving doors will not close until the arm 26 has followed its course to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The arm 26 having followed the above mentioned course, the pawl :28 will disengage from the notch 27 and the foot pedal will immediately come into its inoperative position. It may here be stated that the sides of the frame 4 are beveled in order that if any 'cinders, dust, or snow should fall between the sides of the foot pedal 7 and the frame it will not block, or clog-up.
It must be understood that the constructional details of the herein described invention can be modified, if found desirable, so long as I do not depart from the invention as claimed in the following claims for novelty.
What I claim is 1. Means for revolving fire box doors, comprising a lever fulcrumed intermediate of its length, one end of said lever being connected to a quadrant which actuates the fire box doors, an opening provided in the floor, a frame secured in said opening, a foot pedal pivotally secured in said frame, one end of said foot pedal forming a casing, a slot in the end of said casing, a slot through the top part of said casing, a shaft within said casing and journaled in its sides, a roller mounted on said shaft and resting on the other end of said lever, an arm mounted on said shaft projecting through the slot provided in the top of said casing and a notch provided at the other end of said arm, a pawl secured in said frame, coacting with said notch and means to adjust the movement of said fulcrumed lever substantially as described.
