UNrTnn STATES PATENT Ormea FRIEDRICH OTTO RUPPERT, OF CHEMNITZ, GERMANY.
MECHANICAL rSTOKEFI.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,985, dated November 21, 1893. Application filed January 13, 1893. Serial No. 458,302. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern,.- Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH O 'rro RUP- PERT, engineer, of 2 Platanenstrasse, Chemnitz, in the Kingdom of Saxony and German Empire, have invented a new or Improved 1 Mechanical Stoker, of which the following is fa specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to apparatus for mechanically supplying coal or other fuel to boiler and other furnaces, and its object is to insure a regular and even distribution of the fuel. One form of the apparatus constructed to embody these improvements is shown in the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure l illustrates a vertical section ofthe furnace and the stoking apparatus. Figs. 2 and 3 represent views at right angles toeach other of the mechanism by which motion is imparted to the distributing shovel, and Fig. 4shows'the form of shovel adapted for use with 'furnaces or re boxes, when the doors are narrower than the grates. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the Stoker, showing the means for operating the feed roller andv shovel, ap-n plied 'to the stoker.
Referring to the drawings B is a hopper or receptacle containing the fuel which is to be introduced into the furnace. Next to it and between it and the furnace is the compartment A, containing the feeding roller g and the shovel b. The feeding roller g is formed or provided with suitable projections preferably in the form of ribs by means of which the fuel is fed forward upon the rotation of the roller. able shaped bar orblade which is attached by means of the arms b to the shaft ct. The shape given to the shovel is such as to enable it to easilylift and carry the fuel.
The compartment A .is Aprovided with a door e which may be opened to give access to the furnace when it is desired to light the re or should it ever be necessary to accomplish the stoking by hand. The same compartment is furnished with a door f through which the attendant may remove cinders or slags.
The `firebox or furnace to which the apparatus is attached is indicated at c.
wheels m.
The shovel b consists of a'suit# To prevent the fuel being thrown about unnecessarily, as would happen if the shovel moved at an even speed a varying speed of rotation is imparted to the shaft t to Which the shovel is secured. 'lhisyaryingspeedjis obtained by providing the driving pulley s or its shaft a with a crank the pin ofwhich 7l slides in asocket of asecond crank, indicated 6o at h. This crank h is secured to the shaft ot. It will thus be seen, that if the pulley s'be rotated the shaft a is rotated with it andV accomplishes a complete rotation at the same time, but its speed during the rotation varies owing to the two shafts a and a not being in line. At the moment the shaft a attains its maximum of speed the fuel is discharged exactly from the shovel and thrown into thefurnace.
Last but not least to insure an evendistribution of the fuel upon the grate it is necessary that the maximum of speed, discharging the fuel; be page variable. For this purpose the shaft ais supported' by a moving 75 slide or simply by a lever k, pivoted at An arm n is attached to the lever k. The other end of this arm ismoved by a crank Z, which is slowly rotated. TheA pin of this third crank may be adjustable. When the 8o lever Za is o'scillated by means-of the crank Z the distance between the two shafts a and a is altered continually, which hasits eect upon the maximum of speed of the shaft a and shovel b so that the fuel may be thrown position shown by the dotted lines le and n.
For driving the dierent shafts and rollers any suitable form of gearing may be eY j) ployed.
Should the door or entrance to the firebox orfurnace be of less Width than the grate the roo form of shovel shown at b Fig. 4 may be adopted, by means of which the fuel diverges and is distributed over the full width of the furnace.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: The fire having been lighted through the opening e the hopper B is illed with fuel and the feed rollerg, the shaft a and the crank Z are rotated by any suitable means. The fuel passes through theybottom of the hopper and is fed by the feed roller to the shovel b by which it is thrown upon the grate of the furnace.
This mechanical Stoker may be fitted to every boiler without makingl change on the latter. y
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, 1s-
1. In a mechanical stoker, the combination of the fuel chamber, a revolving shovel mounted in said chamber, a crank on the axis of the revolving shovel, and an eccentrically supported power shaft engaging the crank on the shovel axis, whereby the speed of the shovel can be accelerated for a portion of its revochamber, a slotted crank on the shovel axis,` A
an eccentrically mounted power shaft, and a crank-pin carried by said shaft and engaging the slot in the shovel-crank, substantially as set forth.
3. In a mechanical Stoker. the combination of the fuel chamber, a revolving shovel mounted on a suitable axis in said chamber, a crank on said shovel axis, a power shaft mounted in movable bearings, and means of engagement between the power-shaft and shovel axis, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4t. In a mechanical Stoker, the combination of the fuel chamber, a rotating shovel in said fuel chamber, a power shaft mounted in movable bearings, means of engagement between the shovel axis and the power-shaft, and means for automatically varying the position of the movable bearings for varying the accelerated speed of the rotating shovel, as set forth.
5. YIn a mechanical Stoker, the combination of the fuel receptacle, the hinged door to said receptacle adapted to divide it into two compartments and afford means ofl access to the FRIEDRICH OTTO vRUPPERT.
