IMPROVED HORSE-COLLAR PAD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 102,403, dated April 26, 1870.
To all whom it may concern: n
Be it known that I, JAMES S. HUSTON, of Mechanicsburg, in the county of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Horse-Collar Pads, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in providing a horses collar with a flexible metallic pad, the object of which is to give greater ease and comfort to the horses neck by keeping the upper part of the collar sufficiently expanded, and preventing the same from being crushed in on the horses neck when under a heavy draft; also, by this provision of a metallic pad, the difficulty heretofore experienced, in the use of the ordinary pad, of the hamestraps cutting through and resting on the horses neck is entirely obviated.V
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction by referring to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the collar, showing` the pad in its proper place. Fig. 2 is an elevated View of the same, looking through the collar.
The pad A is constructed of any suitable flexible sheet metal, and of width and length to correspond proportionably to that of the collars. This pad or piece of metal is covered with leather to prevent the metal coming in contact with the horses neck, the leather being secured in a substantial lnanner to the metal by means of rivets passing through the metal, and that part of the leather that overlaps the edge of the metal. (See l 2 3, Fig. 1, and at c, Fig. 2.) By this means the head of the rivet is shielded between the leather and metal underneath While it passes through to the top, where it is riveted in a substantial manner, thus making a much more neat, substantial, and economical pad than has been used heretofore.
The pad A may be attached permanently to one side of the collar B by means of rivets, as shown at C, Fig. 2. The other side may be readily adjusted by means of the straps and buckles, as shown in the several figures.
